2002 woes

I am a first time buyer of a explorer 2002 and up untill last month I had nothing but good to say about the vehicle.
last month on the routine check they discovered a leak in the differential seal. No biggy since it didn't seem like a big problem. Here is the depressing news. Last week I heard a rubbing sound when not accelerating. Got the call from the dealership today only to hear such bad news like:
1) Emergency brake needs to be replaced (something I never use)
2) REAR Axile needs to be replaced. Dealership has to send the vehicle to Ford itself to fix this.
The above has to come out of my own pocket since I am 400km over the warrantee period and it will be quite costly. I have the vehicle almost 2 years now and have only put 60400km on the vehicle.
With the preventative maintaince plan visits and since it is still a new vehicle. I do no towing, off roading, heck I haven't even used the 4x4. I am still in denial.
Can any of you offer any much needed advice or insight?
