Engine bogs down and dies

I just purchased a used '88 Chevy k2500. Just recently, it started having a problem which I think may be a Fuel Filter problem, but since I'm a mechanical novice, I thought I'd ask some experts!
Basically, If I press the gas down more than just a little bit, the engine revs like normal, then about 1/2 second later it bogs down and almost stalls until I release the gas pedal. This actually stalled my truck once, and has come close several times. I've noticed that if I just give the truck a tiny bit of gas, it seems to go without stalling.
Could this be a Fuel Filter problem, or is it possibly something else?

Replacing the fuel filter would be a good start.
