Does anyone have an civics here that are automatic? I mean that you plan to keep auto? I have one and am going to try and keep it that way to see what I can do with it. What are the advantages of having an automatic? I know better traction off the line is one. Can I run nitrous through an automatic safely? I really need to know these things guys!!

I'm going automatic, I live in hickory too! I can help you out and shit cuz' I'm gettin' ready for an engin swap soon with an auto tranny setup! I've heard nitrous runs just as good in an auto as a manual (that's just what I've heard). Email me at [email protected] to hook up sometime and chill.

y would you want to stay automatic, there are far more advantages to being a manual than an auto. :screwy: it just doesnt make sense to me, just learn how to drive a manual and once u learn u will never go back to auto.

I know how to drive a manual, I ran 13.7 seconds just this past weekend in my boy Dao's WRX at "Battle of the Imports" in Rockingham, N.C. I just want to stick with what I got right now which is my auto DX. There isn't anything wrong with that is there?

Going with a B18b or B18c with auto tranny for which ever one I get and a torque converter in 3 weeks. Gonna build up the engine really nice and then maybe put a superhcarger on it. I don't see nothing wrong with sticking with an auto when you got one already, i've heard bad things about converted 5 speeds anyways.

I have heard that Autos are more dependable for times and and turbos. Pistons don't get damaged as bad. And u can use an Auto in a similar way to a Manual. Just start off in the lower gears and redline then jump up a gear, and so forth. Plus with a stick everytime u change gears u drop speed for a sec and have to pick back up. nothing major but can determine the outcome of times/races.

automatic compared to manual in stock form sucks ass.....20-25% drivtrain loss as compared to a manual 10-13% but send out the auto to say level 10....and wala 12-15% drivtrain loss....and in braket racing the auto is more consistent....also easier to use n20 or turbo....as you stay on the throttle the whole time.....cost alot to build the tranny to take that kinda abuse though....it can be done though....ive seen nissan trannys come back from level 10 capable of holding up to 400hp....those guys do some great work....hehehe i see bunch of peeps from NC.....lewisville NC here....

I have that exact set up. it was so loud that i couldn't go past 2000 rpm and sounded really tinny. i put in a resonator it sounds so much better nice and deep.

hmmmmn either auto or 5spd can be built to handle the abuse.....like my car for instance....ive been having a problem with shearing off 2nd gear on the mainshaft in my tranny.....im still waiting for someone to make a stronger gearset. the auto does drop rpms....uh its called a gear change....but i do understand what hes saying.....do you? he said speed not rpms...and i would like someone to explane how a piston can become damaged by using a 5spd.....dont tell me UTI wasnt worth the 20grand...ill be pissed....still confused over the piston deal.

My car had an autobox when I got it, and I did a ZC swap and kept it auto. Honestly, I was an idiot. Like, it was pretty quick for an automatic Civic, but not nearly fast enough. I was woried about driving 5 speed so I made up excuses like "Auto is better in traffic" and shit like that.. Now that I've went to a 5 speed B16.. HOLY SHIT. I HATE driving automatics now, and most times I'll just make the other person drive if the vehicle is auto. 5 speed is so much more fun. You're actually doing something, and you have complete and total control of what your engine is doing. 5 speed is even better in traffic because it give you something to do. I absolutley love it compared to driving autoboxes.
Also, you're crippling yourself from another thing that Honda does very well.. Their faster engines are also equipped with gearing that will outdo most competition with a similar power to weight ratio. I don't know any other car with 100lbs-ft of torqe that you can drive around at 50km/h in 5th gear in. The gears are so short I'm in 4th at the end of the 1320. I LOVE IT.
If you're going to spend a bunch of money to make your car faster, be sure to consider the tranny to make it faster, you'd be a fool not too. You'll spend thousands more on your engine and still be getting whooped on by someone with thousands less into theirs, but a 5 speed model.

I raced a guy with my stock D16a6 auto, he had a manual prelude and he lost, (Had to have been a sucky driver though) and raced a newer riced out accord with manual tranny, I won that one too. I can keep control of my gears in my auto by just playing with the throttle. Autos are fun and Manuals are much more fun, but to say a stick will always beat an auto, stock vs. stock just isn't right. Autos can be fast and out race manuals easily, I know this for a fact, I have done it plenty of times (No, not in my current car). But a really really good driver will have a better chance of winning in a manual, but the guy in the auto just might have something for ya'!
And damn, I didn't know there were this many people in N.C. we all should hook up sometime!!!I have no friends that are interested in cars:screwy:. When I try to mention something to them about cars and shit they just nod there head and agree :disappoin

you might want to pick up a motor trend mag sometime, the autos are always like .2-.4 seconds slower in the 0-60 or 1/4 mile.......it takes longer for the auto to shift than a manual (if your good)

Like you said, IF you're a good driver. People can say they can drive a stick and only think they can, I can control the shifts in my car when I take off. No biggie for me. I have fun and know for a fact that an auto can take a stick so...I Don't Care what you drive, I will race you, If you win, good, if not, good for me. and .2 - .4 seconds with a pro driver in a manual don't mean shit. That doesn't mean the guy next to me can drive like that. Auto Vs. Manual = Manual is just more fun.

Do you even know what you're talking about?!
Do you know how long the gears are on auto trannys? Do you realize how gearing affects how fast your car accelerates?
You can control the way your car takes off?! How? Pull it all the way down to 1 or something, or put it in neutral and then to drive? C'mon. With 5 speed you can chose to take off in first gear from ANY rpm, from idle to redline. You don't have that option with auto. You can launch even higher with a 5 speed and feather the clutch out a little to just get motorin' off the line. Sure, some people are quite bad at driving manual, but they'd have to be REALLY bad to lose to an auto. Autos are just getting out of 1st gear in the 1/4.
C'mon man. I'm not going to buy that shit. Why? Because I know. I've been there, I've seen it. I've seen guys with a 5 speed Si with good gearing pull on my auto ZC because while I'm waiting for fucking ever for the car to reach redline, his gearing allows him to do so about 2 times before my car even fuckin' shifts.
Autos on Hondas ARE BRUTAL.

the jdm auto b16 is an excellent tranny tho, as the gearings arent as tall as a normal autobox, they can be very quick, with a new torque convertor you can shave almost a full second of your et just with that change, not to mention if you turbo an auto, they dont drop boost between shifts like a manual does, they are also much more reliable and wont break down as much. if you race(bracket) you can get consistent times and dial in your et much better than a manual driver can, you can start winning some serious dough.
when my auto b16 is done, you peeps will see what i run, that auto's can compete, and when my car is driving imma get a sticker that says
"You just lost to an Automatic!"

hey im curious about your choice of using the auto tranny. arent you a certified mechanic or something? also do u think a turbo b16 manual would lose to a turbo b16 auto? also wouldnt a turbo b16 auto setup cost more than a manual setup?

okay choice for the autobox, is 1 i didnt wanna do the conversion to stick, 2 didnt wanna buy a new car that was manual, and 3, very very rarely does my mom need to use my crx for some reason so she wanted an auto, she paid for most of the engine itself as a birthday gift, and she said if i didnt get an auto she wouldnt back the funds for it.
yes im a mechanic, anyway if all things were the same in both setups, stock for stock, id say the manual would win, it depends on the skill of the driver tho, if he can do quick shifts, the loss of boost may not be enough to let the auto driver win, however, with the right torque convertor, the auto-box could prolly win.
the cost of each setup should be about the same aswell.

You got #s for the gearing of an auto B16 tranny?
My S1 has the most retardedly short 1st and 2nd gear.. The exact same engine in the same car, but different tranny I would put all my money on the 5 speed.
I realize that a lot of cars that pull fast times are auto too.. Automatic racers bring this up often. But what they aren't looking at is that those cars make more than 111lbs-ft @7000rpm. Those cars have torque in the low like 3000rpm range and thats why its okay for them, thats how they get away with it.
With autos you can buy torque converters, with manual you can put lighter flywheels, shorter FDs, more heavy duty clutch..
blah blah blah though.. I don't even know how many times we've talked about this. I want to see REAL NUMBERS put up by auto drivers then I'll maybe start to believe, until then, no. And I'm not just blabbing about shit that I've heard or read, the stuff that I talk about is real 1st hand experience with automatics and standards. No BS here.

I never said I can control my revs when launching, I said I can control my gears after takeing off. I did say that manual with a GOOD driver can beat an auto. I know first hand that autos arn't as shitty as alot of people think they are. My auto setup should be done within' a month and I will give you my times then. And you just may be surprised with the results. And until then I don't care what you say or anyone else says about autos being shitty...you will have your results soon. k so u guys are complaining about whats better, an auto or manual...
well heres what i got to say
- v8 domestics 90% use auto(and in quarter mile racing, i dont car what u guys are gunna say domestics are,per capita, WAY faster than imports)..
- if ur going full out race on a car, honustly, why waste thosands and thosands of dollars on an import?.. i know im gunna flamed bad but i really dont care, go spend all that money on a domestic, ur car will be super phat, and super fast..(now if ur going for handling, i take this comment back.. but handlings not what were talkin bout here)
- have u guys ever heard of bracket racing?.. autos will CRUSH 80% of manuals in brackets... and if ur going out tryin to have the FASTEST sport compact.. gooooddd luuckk.. maybe 5 yrs. ago u would have a shot.. so all i have to say there is, go for bracket racing in a honda, itll save u much dissapointment and be much more fun..
- stick is very fun to drive.. but now ur going off saying ur racing, well, there goes ur clutch, and if u wanna get a racing A.C.T. or any other brand clutch, then good luck with every day driveability... cuz that clutch is gunna SUCK ass drivin all the time..
so my main point?.. (for 1/4 mile racing in an import) if u wanna go have fun, take sum wins, still be quick, and have over all good driveability... just use the auto...
dont get me wrong here.. imports are tha SHEEITT for handling, luv em!.. altho i must admit, ive seen some rank ass domestics too :evillol: :icon16: ....
and just so u all do know.. i LOVE 4th gens, and will always stick with em... but id never go full race on one, no point.. meh, if u wanna go fast in a 4 cyl, get a dsm or somethin, they own the track 80% of the time....
hmmm well, let the flames begin, cuz i know tons of u are gunna say shit ... maybe u guys should actually think about what im saying.. ive looked at these points many-a-times.. and theyre my over-al theory (well one of mannnyy)..

- v8 domestics 90% use auto(and in quarter mile racing, i dont car what u guys are gunna say domestics are,per capita, WAY faster than imports)..
Did I already mention this? What you're not telling is that domestics make so much peak torque at like 3000rpm or even lower, why would they need much shorter gearing? Plus, back then the auto trannys were made for power.. Honda trannys on the other hand are not. Mine was fucked after like less than 6 months. Fucked. I couldn't even give it away.
- if ur going full out race on a car, honustly, why waste thosands and thosands of dollars on an import?.. i know im gunna flamed bad but i really dont care, go spend all that money on a domestic, ur car will be super phat, and super fast..(now if ur going for handling, i take this comment back.. but handlings not what were talkin bout here)
So if handling isn't an issue on a race car why would anyone be driving a Honda? Also maybe some people prefer the way a 2100lbs. car stops so quickly.. And with a little work and some coin you can have one that goes pretty quickly too. A lot of domestics really AREN'T that fast, its just that there are so many painfully slow Hondas out there. Plus the looks of a domestic car obviously don't nessicarily appeal to such Honda drivers. But don't even turn this into an import VS. domestic thread.
But what makes braket racing so fun is its two guys racing thier cars that are evenly matched, and its up to the driver to be consistant.. I could never see how it would be fun for the guys at the track with autos running like 17.5s and worse, but still winning at bracket racing. Like, there's no props for that all you have to do is mash the gas.
- stick is very fun to drive.. but now ur going off saying ur racing, well, there goes ur clutch, and if u wanna get a racing A.C.T. or any other brand clutch, then good luck with every day driveability... cuz that clutch is gunna SUCK ass drivin all the time..
Again, Honda is known for making quite good perfomance oriented OEM parts. The ITR clutch for example, can handle 200whp and drive daily just as comfortable as an OE one.. A lot of aftermaket companys make some cluthes that are designed to hold power, but still be pretty easy to dive... Pedal feel is really something that people play out a lot.. Like, its pushing a pedal. Its just another excuse not to drive standard. Obviously if you get like an ACT3 or something super rediculous (wich a lot of people do) then its not going to be such a plesant experience, but thats what you get for buying a clutch for more that they need.
meh, if u wanna go fast in a 4 cyl, get a dsm or somethin, they own the track 80% of the time....
There are other paths, and you can still drive and love your 4th gen. ;)

Here's a good way to end this Auto Vs. Manual crap.
If you prefer a manual. drive one. If you prefer an auto, drive one. If you prefer neither, then you'll walk. But an auto is just as good as a manual. Period.
My opinion is a manual is more fun but an auto is alright with me and I have beat other manual honda's with my p.o.s. d16a6 auto., so going to a manual is pointless if you have an auto.(Unless you have fun changing gears, I know I do!)
I just read this: over 85% of automatic cars are in america, we are some lazy bastards!
If you prefer a manual. drive one. If you prefer an auto, drive one. If you prefer neither, then you'll walk. But an auto is just as good as a manual. Period.

Oh, and i live in Gastonia and Banner Elk(near Boone)
Just FYI
ROFL - funniest post since the Swedish CAI thread.
I'm sorry, but you shouldn't believe everything you hear :loser: :loser: :loser:
Looking at all you arguments - explain why Honda only released the EF8/EF9 as a manual then :p
Pistons - I have 250,060km on my odometer and am still running the original gearbox and B16A. I truly don't understand how the GEARBOX affects the PISTONS.
Auto on times - line up 2 Civics that are mirrors - I can pretty much guarentee that someone who is flat shifting a manual will smoke an auto every time. ALLMTR ran a 12.8 in a '84 Civic NA using a manual over here.
I suggest maybe you go get some knowledge to go with your hearsay :banghead: :crying: :banghead: :sly: :uhoh: :iceslolan

- stick is very fun to drive.. but now ur going off saying ur racing, well, there goes ur clutch, and if u wanna get a racing A.C.T. or any other brand clutch, then good luck with every day driveability... cuz that clutch is gunna SUCK ass drivin all the time..
hmmm well, let the flames begin, cuz i know tons of u are gunna say shit ... maybe u guys should actually think about what im saying.. ive looked at these points many-a-times.. and theyre my over-al theory (well one of mannnyy)..
i wonder if you can even drive a manual, becuz its really not that hard with a stage 1 or 2, or annoying as an auto. i guess i should respect all the big time d15/d16 auto racers out there, 17 second cars watch out hes got an automatic  and hes so reliable. look if your into making your autos faster thats fine. but i bet you drive a d series auto and you have all these "theorys" about racing. but lets see what you run. and i will guarantee you that a manual car with the exact same set up as you will be quicker. i just hate when ppl can be so ignorant about something they dont even know. if you think the only advatage to driving a manual would be that its funner :screwy: :shakehead . then i guess you really dont know about hondas.

Does anyone know if someone makes shift kits for automatic hondas? I'm looking for one like the Hurst shift kits that are made for domestics or are they universal? I've seen the Hurst kits in Autozone but they are only for Chrysler, GMC, and the like.

I kept my autobox after I put in my ZC dualcarb. The box handles the higher torque without a problem. Because I can drive the box with lock-up function, basically choosing when to change, I can control exactly when to switch, and the switchover is INSTANT.
And that probably is the reason why I have won so many times, even driving a dualcarb'd auto civic 4door... While the other guys are pushing clutch, selecting gear and changing back to throttle, my car does not lose that split-second torque changeover they do. Point is, while they change gears, I pull away from them, and they just never manage to catch up again. Very few stickshift racers actually know how to snapchange their gears... of course it also hepls to diet your car and make it lighter.
And yes, "the preferred application for nitrous assisted vehicles is an automatic equipped vehicle"... quote taken from NX itself.
Cars I have beaten?: Opel Astras, VW Golf GTi's, Toyota Corolla and Camry, BMW 316iS (sport), Ford escort.
Cars I have managed to stick with until 3rd?: BMW M3, Audi 1.8T.

Hmm.. That would make sense.. IF YOU HAD THE SAME GEARING. But what 5 speed tranny has the same gearing as a slushbox? A person with a standard redlines (making peak power) considerably before you do with an auto, then they'll go back to redline and beat you to it a 2nd time before you reach redline again.. Its the benifits of shorter gearing.
There is no fuckin' way having an auto is an advantage... :loser:
Just keep telling yourselves that guys... :sly:

Maybe not an advantage, but also not a disadvantage. Or maybe you think I sucked everything I said out of my thumb. That would make more sense to you, wouldn't it? I just could not be telling the truth, because I drive an auto and you drive a stickshift.
Truth is, I do not care about impressing your ass, and the cars I have beaten are the cars I have beaten, that is the way it stands.
Maybe my engine is powerful enough to compensate for the long gearing...
Maybe I have a gearbox from a Del Sol D15B vtec in my car, with two very quick first gears...
Maybe the other cars I raced pretended to smoke their tires when we pulled away...
And even I have been beaten by other auto's where I live. One of the fastest cars in South Africa is a Rotary Mazda 323 with sub 10 second runs, owned by a dude named Manny Marinho... and his Mazda is also an auto.

No. Like I said, I've had an auto before.. An auto ZC. Its not because you drive auto, its just that shorter gearing = faster acceleration. More gears = ablitly to have shorter gearing.
That 10 second Mazda has something your car doesn't.. Didn't we already cover this? Torque.
Oh ya.. 4th gens are cool.

uh lemme say this.......the auto......great gearing for certain applications ie turbo/n20/sc.....anything with high tq demands...the manual....good all around...apply a tq monster to it and you get loads of wheel spin....so basically there are no good or bad points about both trannys...it all depends if it fits your application of not....

srry i kno the thread is over a year old lol - but the debate still rages on and people have more questions about it so i bring this thread up:
crxlvr - did you ever get to finishing that auto b16 or it didn't work out for ya?
D15Bitch - do you even post on here? What tranny was that again?
frozen_Joth - are you still around and do you still have ur auto?
i wanted to look into a JDM autobox for my d16a6 - anyone know where i can get it, and how much power it can handle? i was also looking into just buying a used auto tranny and sending it over somewhere to have them mess with it to handle the higher power rating

believe it or not, i still have yet to finish this project, and for anyone wanting to try it, forget it. this is the most complicated thing anyone will ever try. i have all but given up hope on my auto b16 until i located one shop in the greater ny area that will attempt this. i have spent thousands of dollars getting this car ready all in the wish i can run with my friends trans am, which ran a 13.6.
my car will be going into the shop sometime in the next two weeks, or it will be going up for sale. i hate to say that as the crx was my first and only car so far, and id hate to part with her. but im 23 and im starting to lose the whole honda bug. im a big guy and i need a big car, especially one with 4 or more seats. a new ram may be in my future, as i am fond of trucks, but we shall see.

I don't understand that it needs to be auto so your mom can drive it, but since its been off the road, what has she been driving!? Might as well have just went with the 5 speed and bought her a $500 auto-beater.
Guys, just learn to drive stick, pleaaaase. Once you learn you'll never want to go back.

well to tell ya, she has a bmw 325 convertible. but since we all know how well german cars are made, she occiasionally took my crx to run her errands and what not. but since we got the now damaged accord, she doesnt drive the crx anymore. however i still dont want to change the car to manual since iver put so much into the auto tranny, wiring, torque converter, etc i want to see how it runs already.

Everyone got all pissed saying an auto can be fast. Yes it can be fast. Thats not the point. Take two identical cars one stick and one auto and the stick will win.

i'll hafta look into that del sol transmission, because i looked up the d16a6 ex tranny and a used one is about $300, which isn't terrible but if i can get one for around that price that handles higher hp, then i'd be stylin :P But i think just for simplicity and bolt-on-alicious-ness i'll keep the tranny i have.
And yes, everyone has their opinion on auto or stick and which they'd rather drive. IT's just like the turbo vs supercharger debate, it's what you want out of your car. As far as 2 identical cars running the diff tranny, i think a properly built automatic (race spec) will match a manual - but just any ol regular auto won't hold up to a manual cuz it takes so much more power to get the car moving. Just me 5 and a half cents :)
I'd like to build up my auto, but money is so short right now...i just wanna get my car rust-free for now. But i always like to have plans and goals ^_^

Oh please, you really live under the misimpression that we drive sportscars? We drive upgraded, slightly optimised people movers at best. I've never had aspirations to have a "sportscar", just a car that I enjoy more than a stock honda... it's is nice being able to kick a BMW 328i's ass, or to not have to gear down on an uphill like other motorists... but dont think that I EVER did any mods to my car so that your ass could be impressed...
