320i exhaust

I have a 1979 320i and I'm looking to put on a new exhaust system. If I'm looking for increased performance should I replace the reactor and the middle pipe? Will it make that much of a difference? How about hollowing out the reactor?
How about a good muffler? I read that Leistritz was good.
