I think the Callaway Corvette Sledgehammer is the fastest street legal car....254.7 mph ( It did reach 256 in '86 ) :grinyes:

doesn't leave much to discuss does it? for a more up-to-date list:

dont' ask why the mclaren isn't up there. it's not my list.

That list of cars is from the manufacturer for 2003. Calloway doesn't make a vette - it just modifies them. F1s aren't being made anymore are they?

to me the Dauer 962 is far more impressive though as it can handle aswell. The Callaway might be the fastest on the straight but thats about it.

hehe.. damned right... the 962's a God.. but if it can do "only" 252mph compared to the Sledgehammer's 255, then that's that :)

Yea Callaway is a tuner...not a production make

He didn't say production, he said street legal
And for a while, the Callaway Twin Turbo was an RPO (regular production option) at Chevrolet. Callaway has also done work for Mazda and Land Rover. They aren't always a tuner, sometimes they work with manufacturers, sort of like AMG with Merc.

AMG was a tuner until it was bought by Merc. then it became part of their production lineup.
Note this is unlike Shelby and Saleen who are considered to be seperate manufacturers and the Saleen/Shelby Mustang is not considered to be a ford.

The whole term street legal is so grey...or gray...lol
I mean there are some sub 10 second cars around here that drive on slicks, have wheelie bars and paracutes...so are they street legal too? i guess so since they can drive around just like a Geo Metro can...problem is...they dont have the 9.00 second time slips...

But if we're going to say the Callaway Sledgehammer is a production car, then we could also say a Gemballa GT2 or the Ferrari F2003GA are both production cars.
And remember any car that does not pass emitions testing with all its mods installed is not street legal.

The fastest street legal car, as far as acceleration goes, is the Lingenfelter Corvette. It does 0-60 in 1.97 sec. and a quarter mile in 8.9 on pump gas

street legal has nothing to do with production. if the car can be legally registered and driven on the road, it is street legal.

Street Legal means its running on normal gas, passes emissions and such

I read a crazy article on Lingenfelter.com when they first came out with the 225 MPH TT Vette, about 2-3 years ago.
Lingenfelter made some kinda crazy engine pumping around 1600 HP into an 80's Trans-Am, pushing it to 298 MPH... They said it was Stock-Bodied, and held the record for Stock-bodied... But im damned sure it wasnt street legal.

There's supposedly a new car coming out from Switzerland, for those of you dont know, and they clame it'll go 258 mph. Other such specs are 2.7 seconds to 60 mph, it ways 1874 lbs, and is suppose to have 641 hp and 664 lb-ft torque, it's an Audi 4.2 V8, seven speed sequential, and a 9 speed is optional, crazy. Get this though, base price is only suppose to be around 260,000 US$. For a fourth of the price of a Mclaren or Veyron you can have a car that beats the snot out of both of them. It's CD drag is .26. Other info is from Autoweek so I'm sure they'll have the article on their site soon.

I emailed the guy from svs once, and they don't have it posted on their site, but there's an article about taking their stryker TT to the salt flats, and when I emailed the guy he said they topped it at 265... I don't know if you consider the stryker TT to be street legal... with the boost controller turned down it is street legal, but this is where we get into the gray area... ya know? I don't know if it passes emissions when it's running at full boost.

it gets a little tricky to judge whats street legal, i personally dont count these one-offs

What about the venom 1000tt? does high 8's, and is a current car. Just be preparied to have nice deep pockets. It should handle very well if you get the complete package.
VenomInMyVeins
10-12-2003, 08:06 PM
yeah.. it does get in the 8's.. 8.93 seconds to be exact... but we're talking about fastest, not quickest. Fastest is top speed. Quickest is acceleration. Plus there has been a lot of criticism on the venom, basically upon the maker (hms). go to the viper forum and talk to us there about it. So still the fastest street legal car I can conjure up is the striker twin turbo viper. 265mph supposedly.

sorry I'm posting twice in succession.. I hate it when people do it... it's such a waste of space, but I just noticed what mr payne had to say. Orca is the company that is not backed by dodge, but uses the viper in their races.

Oh. hmm.. the super viper systems SVSi Stryker TT Stage III(1100 hp to the crank) does 260MPH according to their website. Tho that one vette with like 1000 hp or whatever prolly is faster- better aerodynamics. Vipers dont have the greatest aero(.35 for the "old" ones and .40 with the top up and .44 with the top down with the srt-10).
Oh and yes, I've heard about John rippin some people off. So ya.. I'd get thte SVS kit if I had a viper and was insane nuff to want 900-950 HP to the wheels.

the gears and ratio has a lot to do with the top speed too.. plus there's going to be more tourque comming out of a v10 instead of just a v8.. so it's hard to say that the vette is going to be faster than the viper just based on the drag coefficient.

A Lingenfelter 650TT was clocked by a magazine at 226mph. Remember, this has a 2 year warranty and people make bigger packages than that.

That Lingenfelter was the older "Slower" turbo'd one too. I havent seen yet, any attempts at top speed with the 427TT that they ran the 1.97/8.93 0-60/ 1/4 times with. They knocked off around 2 seconds in the quarter mile.. who knows what that would mean in top end speeds.

Prolly 270... too fast. Not streetable.. but this guy said he saw some modded american muscle car that had like 1000 horse runnin on the street :screwy:(hard to believe).
I mean even on a race track you're only gonna be doin maybe 250 mph, cuz you're gonna be usin your power to add more down force. Imagine how fast those cars would go if they were designed for top speed, not 1/4 mile and track use.

well, 'us haters' could talk about the technical problems that have delayed the launch of the Veyron... Actually, Im not in the 'hater' category but i do think it's somewhat of a pointless car and a wasted opportunity for VW

Agreed, and you're saying est 252.. we've been talkin about faster... so it's obviously not the fastest. Not bad tho, but still...

the veryon, no matter what is said, its gonna be the fastest street legal car. at least stock. we all know there's street legal supra's and what not that are sreet legal, that are all souped up and ready to run.
as far as the tech probs, well thats the reason its bieng delayed is so they can fix the problem. other than that you have the koenigsegg and the enzo and the mclaren f1, and there was the top speed king the sledgehammer that ran 10.8 if i remeber correctly, but thats not stock.

Fastest stock at this point is the enzo. soon to be the veyron. as far as the sledgehammer. why are you judging a car by it's 1/4 mi time in a fastest? 1/4 mi is accel... not speed.
