While I won't give away all of my secrets, I can explain a bit.

Understand the putty.
There are three kinds, conventional hobby putty, epoxy putty and polyester putty. Conventional putty hardens by the evaporation of the solvent, so it sticks to the plastic well, but it shrinks. Epoxy and polyester putty cures by chemical reaction, so the shrinkage is negligible. You use either epoxy or polyester putty for a thick application like body kits.

Use plastic template.
Cut out symmetric templates from styrene sheet, and glue them to the body, then use putty.

The rest is a simple repeat of applying putty and carving until you achieve the desired shape.
