Go to a junkyard:
auto to manual ecu - $50-$200
transmission - $300-$400
clutch - $250-$500 (get this part new, used clutches are like buying used brakepads)
shift linkage and stick - $50-$100
clutch pedal and crap - $30-$50
Labor averages $50-$65 per hour, and would probably take them a while to rip out all the old and put in the new.

Not really cheaper to get a new car, just smarter.

if i had the choice mine would have been 2 door standard. Being 16 though... i wasnt exactly picky and i didnt exactly get a big choice on what i got. Luckily it wasnt some taurus crap.. but yeah.. got a '96 civic. im currently 17 and bout to go into college after this last year in HS. I was considering trading it in for a newer/nicer car but i figure if i can get it paid off.. which it will be in a few more payments.. i can just dump all my money im makin from my job (being that my parents pay my insurance) into fixin up my civic. I saw a 4 door the other day that looked really nice and that's what inspired me. The auto transmission really bothers me tho. So anyway.. thats my story in a paragraph ;p
