TDI Engines

Hey my dad has this 1996 Passat TDI... 90hp/154lbs torque. The ones with the euro chip in it has like 110hp/170lbs torque. I've seen aftermarket chips with 115hp/175lbs torque. I was thinking new injectors, a larger turbo, a badass chip, MAF trick box thingy, new exhaust, bigger intercooler, and a few little things here and there could get it 180hp/250lbs torque (friend used to have one w/ 170hp but less stuff on it). Any ideas of what the hell this would run?

Isn't torque what you really need for acceleration?

By the way. TDI is Turbocharged Direct Injection (diesel)... 1.9L. And no, I'm not smoking weed or sniffing crack. :smoka:

Even after only being here for a short period of time, I get the impression that putting mods on a fwd car is a waste of money. If I am wrong here, please raise your hand or just shout at me.

Now, I think there might be some kits to turn your fwd Passat into an AWD. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, is his Passat a manual transmission or an auto?

Just from reading a few posts, I get the idea that the preferred automobile to mod for racing would be Rwd or Awd and manual transmission.

What are you trying to accomplish?

The car is FWD but as I understand you CAN get traction in the front from various suspension adjustments... and this car already has a lot of traction. It's 5 spd manual and I'm just wondering because my dad's claiming he wants to give me this car in a year or so and I want to know if it's worth starting to mod up or just telling him to keep it or sell it.

The problem here isnt traction... it's that it runs on diesel! :bloated:

Jeez, a free Passat. That's a nice gift. Refusing such a gift would appear arrogant. I can tell you that if I had a kid and offered him a free 25K+ car and he told me no, I would be less likely to offer my kid anything else in the near future.

Just take the car. And realize that your friends will start calling you spoiled!

Of course, you can take an alternate route, and tell your dad that you would like to earn your own car. In other words, that you will get a part time job and pay for a car. This would be the preferred way and responsible way of turning down the offer.

I am certain that this will gain you alot of respect from your father. Then, you can pick up a used car and mod it to your hearts content. Everyone wins. But you'll have to work for it.

The thing is, I'd already have a car! But a nice little quick diesel that shot black smoke out the tail would be badass. :licker:

Hrmmm.... I souped up diesel that is bult for excelleration and speed? Never seen such a thing, but then again i haven't seen everything.

I still have the eclipse. I'm thinking of giving it back and getting the $$ I payed for it back (got it from friend's dealership).
