You could use a wireless camera that would transmit a signal within a given short distance. You could hook a VCR up to the receiver and record every night. Distances are pretty short though.

Funny thing, I had the same idea, but my biggest problem is that I don't want to use a wireless connection because if/when the thief is out of range the signal is gone. A portable recorder would probably go for like 1600$ and then one isn't shure if it 1. has power enough if something happens and 2. the quallity of the tape and then ultimately the recording when it has been installed and hidden away in a car for a summer or two.

My idea is to use a digital webcam like memory and a CCD-camera module to capture the video, that way I could even hook it up to one of those small computers for 100$ that people can make programmable internet routers/firewalls with and possibly even make it call a BBS or ISP and start uploading the video of the perp. live!

And since it's mostly your imagination that is the limit to what you can capture and control the possibilities of customisation is virtually endless.

A note to why I want to use CCD-cameras is that they are 1.) small, some are not larger that 1x1x3 centimeters. Wich makes them easy to install and conseal. 2.) they are very affordable due to the wide use of them in all sorts of apps. 3.) and probably the best one, they can capture images in COMPLETE DARKNESS, you only need to add some IR-LED:s in the compartement to make the video look like it's being recorded in broad daylight. *evilgrin* and the perp will never even know he's on hidden camera since humans can't see IR. ;-)

By also recording sound you can get all sorts of info including the name of the perp, since most don't expect to be recorded in the first place it's likely you'll get to know if he had an accomplice too.

I'd like to see the thiefs expression when he's lawyer has spent an entire afternoon to build him a reputation of a saint just for it to be wrecked when the jury booth watches him steal the car and can hear as he might taunt the legal system in the process.

And while you are at it why not install remote controlled mace spray?
..now that's autoprotection for you. ;->

Well.. hope I gave someone some usefull ideas.
We might not be able to prevent them from getting into our cars but we shure as h*ll won't accept it.

Best of luck to you all
