Anyone know if such an endeavor has been attempted, what degree of success/failure, and difficulty?

What do you mean? swapping the motor with a rotary motor or Porsche building a rotary motor? If you mean Porsche building a rotary motor I would think they never tried to because i believe the rotary motor is Mazda's patented design and cant be reproduces by any other company. Kinda like the Hemi motor, only Dodge makes Hemi cause they have a patenet for the design.

Nope, meant swapping motor.

Not that there is anything wrong with my engine now, but I was just thinking of having some fun with a junkyard engine, but if it the idea is absolutley insane, I'd like to hear some first hand experience or whatnot.

I can think of a million good easy reasons for not doing it, but something a little more practical like the problems in the job itself is what I'd like to know.

Thanks!

Rob

Mazda didn't invent the rotary. It is a Wankel. I believe designed in Germany. When I lived in Berlin, an acquaitence of mine had a Wankel in an Alfa Romeo.

Like all Japanese cars, they copied it from someboby.

just get a 2nd gen RX7. It looks the same as a 924/944 and has a rotary. It looks so alike that Porsche sued.
