Damn MAF...

I just put my weapon r dragon intake on my 02. all was well for a while, i drove around for like 30 miles just listening to it, then i drove to school and to my friends house, about 75 miles in all. then just out of the blue i was driving and i nailed the gas and at around 5000 rpm as it switched to the second intake runner the car felt like it popped out of gear and it just stalled out on me. I couldn't get it to start until i disconnected the plug on the airflow sensor, and even then it will have a rough idle and won't rev over 2500 rpm even if you reconnect the plug while it's running.
so i took the intake off and returned the stock aribox and as i expected the i still had the same problem.

in my opinion the Dragon air filter was quite greasy out of the box and i was wondering if it's possible for the sensor to have gotten covered in filter oil and therefore can no longer function properly. now i know i'm not the first person in the world to get a Weapon R dragon intake so has anyone else run itnto this? What options do i have to remedy this, other than buying a new airflow sensor?

MAF Failures-This seems to be a common problem with 2k2/2k3 Maximas across the board no matter what intake you've added, especially ones that are greasy.

What was suggested over at the org was that you let your filter sit out overnight on a papertowel so that it can soak up any excess oil and then you clean your TB and wipe off MAF sensors. I don't know of any other cures for this problem.

I've read so many threads/replies on the org about 2k2/2k3 MAF failures that it seems to only happen when someone adds an aftermarket intake, especially a greasy one.

Go do a search on the org and see if anyone has the same intake as yours, maybe they'll know exactly what to do.

i posted on the org but they're down for the long weekend. i tried cleaning the mafs with brake pad cleaner on a rag but i didn't touch the throttle body, i will though. is it possible that excessive airflow "blew" my MAFS. if so could i get a 350z MAFS? this is pissing me of so bad cuz the car sounded so awesome while it worked. i caught so many people looking my direction at school when i was ripping through the parking lot. i emailed weapon-r too but i doubt they'll get back to me till after labor day and they don't have a Phone # listed anywhere.

Yeah, I peeped that message over at the org. I don't believe the MAFs are interchangeable between the Z and the Max, I'm certain that it wasn't too much airflow, otherwise we'd never be able to turbo/n20 or sc our cars.
Have you tried the WeaponR website to see if they have a phone number or a contact email address?

I believe that our MAF's are different in both the Z and Max, even though the engine is the same, the TB's are different so I believe the Z is capable of a little more airflow (not that it should make a difference based on what I said earlier), however our programming is different but you'd think that our ECU would be able to negotiate that.

Like I said, I'm not sure, so I'm just kinda brainstorming, go to the Z forum on this site and ask a question over there maybe one of them will know.

That is one of the only good thing about recalls is that they are free and the other thing is that they repair whatever it was that's wrong.

If you find out if it is true please post it over here or a link to it.

The other thing is if there really is a recall of some sort for your model year vehicle then why isn't it on Nissan's website under their recall section?

I see a boat load of recalls on their website but none refers to the MAF.

i looked at the MAFS that i got from nissan and it looks different from the one that was on there before. there is more plastic covering the metal element inside (which is the actual MAF sensor). hopefully this one won't blow.

and my warranty covered it at no charge at all. i picked up the extended warranty from the used car dealership for an extra $10/month. well worth it.

Congrats man, it seems funny that your MAF seems to be different yet there is no info to support a factory recall of the MAF. Maybe Nissan just didn't want everyone to come in a get a new MAF and made the new ones for those who only come in and complain of MAF failures.

they were probably thinkin' that if the sensor is gonna blow, it'll happen within the factory 36,000 miles powertrain warranty and they'll replace it for free with a better one and if it doesn't blow, you're probably not putting enough strain on your car to ever blow the MAF.

I think it's messed up that Nissan is having a "recall" with notifying anyone. I'm going to walk in to the dealer and tell them I'm having problems with the MAFS just to get it replaced before it DOES blow.

I had a similar thing happen to me 2 months ago where my rear passenger window wouldn't go back up. I brought it to the dealer and they said it was a "faulty clip" causing the problem and that it was recalled already. I checked on Nissan's website, no mention of this "faulty clip". I think it's standard Nissan procedure to not say anything if it isn't a recall that can put anyone in danger (remember Ed Norton's job in Fight Club?)

there isn't an actual "recall" but the new maf has taken a lot of wide open throttle runs without blowing. talk to them anyway, see what happens. i bet if there were enough complaints about it they'd make an actual recall.
