Is there a visual way to tell witch engine it is in there the 2.0 or 1.8 ?? i hope they didnt do a swap lol also ima new to dsm but whats the deal with the 1.8 and 2.0 are they the same block with diff heads or something to that effect ?? and if mine does have the 1.8 should i just junk it lol is it realy worth trying to get power out of this is my first import im messing with so and comments will help :) thanx

Yeah the 1.8 is garbage. The 2.0 says DOHC on the valve cover with the spark plug wires running down the middle of the valave cover. The 1.8 has the spark plug wires near the back of the V/C. I'm sure they are different blocks, and I'm almost 100% the 2.0 head doesn't bolt on.

Yes it seems it does have the POS 1.8, but i alreay bought it and i payed 200$ for it and 35$ for the tranny witch aint to bad. Ill prolly just sell it for 1000$ real quick to someone who need a good running car. Ohh it also have a rebuilt head so that might make it sell quicker but thanx for the help. Ill still be around posting because i might pull a 2.0 at the junk yard for 125$ and 50$ core charge :) cheap and do a engine swap. The car is in real good shape might be worth it to swap motors. What do ya think?

I don't think the 1.8L is garbage, it was a cheap alternative for someone to have a nice car, but a good economy car at the same time. As for the power, yes 92 horsepower is quite low. But the engine was cutt back hard core from potential. If anyone can remember back the 4G32/G32B were turbocharged SOHC 8 valve engines. These were before the 4G63, and shown an okay potential. The 1.8L is the same engine with 9:1 pistons, a lower rating oil pump, higher flowing cylinder head, and higher displacement then the G32B/4G32. The stroke, crank, rods, and everything else is exactly the same. This engine was turbo at one time, just a better engine was produced with greater results. If it were never to come, who knows if the 4G32 would have been the powerhouse for the 1G Eclipse.

Actually , I've read of a few DOHC head swaps on the 1.8's. Dunno actually if it was BS or not. Also , supposedly , the 4G63 crank can be added to stroke it to a 2.0. I don't really know enough about the 1.8 to know if thats possible or not , though.

No, the 1.8L has different sleeves then the 2.0, and it is skinnier. It won't work. End of discussion.

Well thanks for gracing us with your infinite knowledge. This attitude really annoys me. Especially when one calls a smaller bore dimension a "skinnier sleeve." ;) Maybe I'm just on the rag today, who knows...

:) I think you have had alittle too much caffine. But if it makes you feel any better, I can blame it on your stupidity with 1.8's. You probably thought the heads would work :) And I wasn't talking about the sleeves being skinnier, I am talking about the WHOLE block being skinnier. For those who get confused, I guess I need to explain in more detail.

Dont confuse my potential "stupidy" with 1.8s with your stupidity for owning one, or the excercise in futility that is trying to mod one ;) But back to the matter at hand, I believe RockinWRX was thinking of poeple using the 4g63 head/4g64 block hybrid perhaps. I've never heard anyone doing the 4g63 head on the 1.8, but then again, who would waste the time. I still think you mean to mention the bore dimension is smaller, not the sleeves are skinnier. But if you dnt know what you are trying to say, how should I be able to figure it out ;)

Holy fuck dude, 95GSXracer hasn't even posted anything about the 1.8. He corrected you, when you used the term skinnier, is that technical term I havent heard of? If you meant to say the whole block was skinnier you should have sad more narrow, or even said the head bolts in the block won't match the 2.0L head. And yes I get confused when you use a vague description like that. Mabey your the one who needs an attitude adjustment, just because you have "one of the first" 1.8 Turbos out there doesnt mean your king shit.

I believe Narrow and Skinny are the same definition. If I were to say more Narrow, I would infact would have thought of the sleeves. 95 GSX doesn't know shit about a 1.8L, and should stay off posts when concerned about a 1.8 4G37. Let the ones who actually built the engine to help others. As for you, my 1.8L Garbage may be the next worry against you on the track. :)

So skinny sleeves is the new technical term for the bore diameter of a 1.8 4G37?
Not once did 95GSXracer say anything technical about the 1.8, both RockinWRX and I said something.
Sure your car maybe fast, I'm up for a challenge, but I bet I spent way less money than you did achieving the same goals

We are totally getting off topic on this post, but I will reply with this last statement.
My goals are totally off your goals. My goal started when I changed the engine from a Natural Aspirated engine to a Turbocharged engine. THe day I have this engine run low 11's will be a miracle. ANd the day I do that, you can gaurantee that even though I have spent more money they will look at my setup more superior then yours.

It seems like you are an ignorant car builder, and with your advice you seem to not know your ass from a hole in the ground. The "offer" you and 95 GSX both gave me was WRONG. You both thought the 4G37 acts like the 4G63, but this engine runs on a more mechanical base, and doesn't need to be babied. As for you, the day I run 11's, I will take it to your house and have you race me. And the day I do that is next year, so expect me at your door step. :) Have a good day.

By the way, that would be a VR-4 dip shit.

I'll be waiting. And what do you mean the 4G37 runs on a more mechanical base....... All engines use crankshafts , connecting rods , pistons , valves etc. Thats pretty damm mechanical. And the 4G63 doesn't need to be babied either , in fact the 89-92 versions can run 500 Hp out of the box. I seriously doubt your engine can do that.
And since you obviously know NOTHING about Galants , and DSM's in general , I guess I need to explain the fundamental differences between a Galant VR4 and a Galant GSX to you. :loser:
The Galant VR4 has the turbo 4G63 , and AWS , and AECS. The Galant GSX is non-turbo , and has none of the other components , but still AWD. The only non-turbo AWD car Mitsubishi sold here , in fact. Its one step below the GVR4 on the options ladder. Easily converted to turbo , and being a simple AWD arrangement , it will take all the other components that the E/T/L cars have.
Seems to me you don't know jack about your own car , so don't go telling others that they don't know about theirs. :nono:

Funny how my FACTORY manual says they do , and gives details on how to fix it , and test it. Everyone always insists that I am wrong , but they can offer no proof other than "I know about 20 guys with GVR4's and none of them have it." When does the word OPTION start to sink in? ??? My ford f150 manuel had three different engines in it? Yea so the manuel says. But when I look under the hood it only has one engine. You don't even have a vr-4, no US spec. galant vr-4 has AECS. And not one has the option to have it either? So, does the (JDM) Galant vr-4 version that has the AECS have leather? No it doesn't but the mauel says some come with leather, but only the US spec models had leather the rest had cloth interiors.... Have you enven seen a vr-4? I really can't believe you know so little about Galants and DSM's in general... So I bet you think galants are DSM's.......

??? My ford f150 manuel had three different engines in it? Yea so the manuel says. But when I look under the hood it only has one engine. You don't even have a vr-4, no US spec. galant has AECS. And not one has the option to have it either? So, does the (JDM) Galant version that has the AECS have leather? No it doesn't but the mauel says some come with leather, but only the US spec models.... Have you enven seen a vr-4? I really can't believe you know so little about Galants and DSM's in general... So I bet you think galants are DSM's.......
No , I know they are not because they were built in Japan. DSM 's were built here. Thats junior DSM knowledge. But they are considered a part of the DSM line by most DSM'ers. Several guys in the local DSM club have VR4's. But funny how none of them claim to be member's of GalantVR4.org. And so what if I don't have a GVR4? I have a GGSX , which IS one step below it on the options ladder. Sorry if mine doesn't have turbo , which I know this is what all this is about. I know how DSMer's are , they treat the NT guys like dirt. And you say for certain no US spec Galant has AECS , but I know for a fact you are wrong , because one of the local DSM'ers has an AECS equipped Galant the same year as mine.

To my knowledge AECS means "Active Electronically Controlled Suspension" And you expect me to find this guy and take pics of his car? :screwy: And I know its not a JDM spec , because some younger kid owns it. Unless his parents imported it just for him.

You said local CO DSMer has one. So is this person part of CODSM? I know most of the Galant owners who belong to this. If so please direct us to their web page. I repeat NO US spec. Galant vr-4 has electonic controlled suspension, it was never even an option.....Please give us some names of these car owners who supposedly own a US galant vr-4 with AECS, I would like to see some pictures and talk with them....................

I will as many others will; be awaiting the pictures and or names of these people who own a US spec Galants vr-4 with AECS. You don't need to take pictures, just let us know where they are located, if you haven't noticed there are about 6 galant vr-4 owners that live in the Denver area. I will give you all my Galants if you are right......................................

you might have a point there, but please, next time, can you add some punctuation? i hate reading a sentence with 1000 words in it.

Sorry to bring this up but I must point out yet some more mis-information. Ok so here in the next quote (earlier in this thread) you say the vr-4 does have AECS and the GSX doesn't have AECS. Wrong but we'll go with it to prove a point....
The Galant VR4 has the turbo 4G63 , and AWS , and AECS. The Galant GSX is non-turbo , and has none of the other components , but still AWD.
But now below here you say your local Galant owner has a GSX with AECS and it's not a vr-4??
Sorry just read this? Umm thought you had 90 GSX? And a local owns the same year Galant vr-4 as you that has AECS? I hope your not saying they made US vr-4's in 1990?? Are you???
Here is your his reply:

So now what? Your friend has a 90 GSX with no AECS, and the US spec vr-4 doesn't have AECS, so what model has AECS then? Like it has been said only the JDM non-numbered vr-4's have AECS. They (JDM Galants) also have cloth interiors, oh and rear windshield wipers. Some more usefull info.........

So vr-4's aren't DSM's; good we agree on something, but here you said just the opposite, granted this is from a different thread but I find it relavent to the "mis-information" that is being preached by him and others:
I'm also lost about what I saw in your quotes that the Galant VR4 is not "technically" a DSM. Whoever said that is definitely wrong. The GVR4 was imported as a DSM , and has a DSM tag under the hood , which also lists its production #. The GVR4 has the exact same drivetrain as the 1G , in fact all parts are swapable between the 2 , except for some of the ECS suspension pieces and the AWS system , but most GVR4 owners in the know remove both of those anyway. It saves about 200+ lbs off the car. In fact a 1G exhaust system will fit , I've already proved that on my car. The exhaust had to be extended 6 inches because the rear overhang on the Galants is longer than the E/T/L cars , but otherwise the hangers were in the exact same place.......
Whoever said the Galant VR4's are not DSM's is an idiot......
And BTW no US Galant vr-4 has the "DSM" tag under the hood or any place on the car for that matter. Nor is there any place on the US Galant vr-4 except the "dash plaque" that shows the production number. I.e. in 92 the production number on the plaque is 00/1000 and in 91 it would be 00/2000, and only on the plaque would it have the production number, the lower or higher the number means nothing because the plaques where put on at random when they where shipped to the US. So that is the only place you will find a production number... And did you know there were 9 cars produced that didn't have the special edition dash plaque? Also the DSM "tag" your speaking of that is supposedly on the vr-4 is the exact same tag as you have on your GSX, it is white with a grey center and "Mitsubishi" in red printed over and over on it. No DSM anywhere. Oh and the drivetrain isn't exactly the same as a 1g- the driveshaft on the Galant is longer. The whole rear "sub-assebly" weighs around 200 pounds including calipers AND the AWS, you won't dump anywhere near 200pounds removing the AWS, and seeing US galants don't have the AECS that isn't a issue; the total AWS you would remove only weighs around 60 pounds tops, that included the PS lines to the front......
