My check engine light came on on my 1996 maxima 6 cylinder se and I want to find an inexpensive way to read the code and find out what is wrong. Is there a way I can do this or do I have take it in. Also, it has been pinging quite a bit in the summer months even with 93 octane. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Check the ECU. The ECU is right by the Accelerator pedal(to the right) Take the plastic cover off, it is hidden behind it. For more information, click on this link, and it will show you all the steps you need, read it carefully.
