I've often wondered about this too, not just of "names," per se, but of basic words as well. For many of them, I have no theories as to how they evolved as they did, just some mild fascination based upon the fact that they came to be as they are now. Interesting to contemplate how "to," "but," "when," "etc." came to represent what they mean in contemporary English, as well as their equivalents in other laguages.

Little citrus fruits a bit bigger than grapes, with a sweet peel and a very sour middle. You just eat them whole, they usually have them in stores around Dec-May. They are used for relishes and marmalades, and are the only citrus fruit where you eat the peel. I believe they are native to China but are now grown in the US.
