what is the little bypass filter or something like that, that makes it so you can't suck any water into your engine? thanks

Well, since you don't want to read through the multiple CAI threads or spend time looking for them. The Bypass Valve goes on the intake tube and when the pressure drops (b/c your filter is submerged in water or has water in it), the bypass valve opens and allows you to get air to the engine that way. Instead of sucking it up your intake tube and into your engine.

It's only useful if you'll ever have to drive through 6"+ of water. Instead of sucking water into the engine through the filter, the bypass valve flaps will open, temporarily sucking in air through a cheap foam.

A waste of money. Only will function when air inlet is choked enough to up it, damn deep water if you ask me. If you wanna run in deep water put a snorkel on it.
