Upgrading a processor?!?

Hey guys i need some help I need some info on how to upgrade my processor its a {AMD-K6 3D} its 333mhz and i need a Faster one like 600mhz and up? and help? and how much its gonna cost

There is no way you are going to find a store that sells any new slot 1 Athlons which is what you need. I am also not sure how fast of a processor you can put in your motherboard. Here is a seach on eBay for some slot 1 AMDs. Looks like they are pretty cheap.

I think u mean slot a, he's mainly talking about using his current motherboard for it.

The current motherboard u have is a super-socket 7, then this is where intel made their slot one, and amd made their own socket a to compete with them.

Now intel uses socket 478 and amd socket A. The cpu your looking for (600mhz) is a slot A type, and you'll need to upgrade your motherboard too.

So your best option now is to get a cheap upgrade, as your system is a little too old for "addons".

I would reccomend buying what is called a barebone system which usually consists of case, motherboard & cpu, RAM, integrated video and sound a power supply. Usually all you need to add is a HD and CD ROM. You can usually pick these up off ebay for around $150-200

dude if ur pc is only 333mhz then maybe u should consider getting a new comp and getting something a little faster.

Whoops, I'm sorry, the AMDs used slot A and the Intels used slot 1.

you can do it relatively cheaply depending on what you want to spend, u can get some of the new stuff really cheap. the athalon products that is, P4 products are over priced imho. also you will need a new motherboard if you want +.

i'm going to get an 80 GB hd, 512 DDR RAM, a new motherboard, an athlon 2000 processor(2GHz!@!!!), and a tower all for around 300 bux...for me that's beyond cheap compared to when i bought my compaq like two or three years ago which cost like around 1500 dollars and that was just the tower with everything in it.
don't need a modem i have cable modem for that

Since cost cutting is being mentioned, wait till the end of year where the amd 64 cpus will cut in and the prices of the xp processor's will drop, it'll make it a great snatch as the amd 64 is still a bit steep but the savings might be minimal.

It depends if your buying a pre-made or building yourself, cost will make a difference there.

The amd 64 cpus are out for sale now as we're speaking, I know they're available in japan, and maybe australia as the launch party was held a few days ago, but not sure if mainstream market would get it or if it is afforable for just normal computing application.

Regarding the price drop of the amd xp processor, it is very hard to predict as it is a huge jump between current processors and the amd 64 processor, the architecture in itself is a big jump. 32 bits to 64 bits may sound insignificant, but taken into account the number system, normalization, the number range it can cope, along with the decimal place precision it is in a league of its own. Heck a lot of mainframes are still currently running 60 bits cpu (don't ask y 60 bits, it has to do with pro-priatry architecture and representation of various data structures using a 10 bit length, or other bit length, compared to the ansi length of 7/8 bits, hence ASCII).

Athlon XP's are fairly inexpensive right now. I built my roommate's new PC as well as my new system. The Athlon XP 1800 (1.53ghz Palomino core) I bought for his was like $50. The Intel Pentium III (1.2ghz Tualatin core) I bought for my PC earlier in the year was about $100.

As for the price drop, I don't expect the end-user prices to fluctuate all that much right now (well, not any more than they are currently anyway). The 64-bit CPU's will be available, but mostly businesses will be utilizing those for the time being.

yea, I love the athalon xp prices. I got my 2700+ for around 140 ( i think) about 2 months ago. The performance of the 64 bits are amazing, but they are insanely expensive, i saw just the 3200+ 64 bit chip at COMPUSA for $600. Of course this is COMPUSA we are talking about, so it can be had for a good deal less at other palces.

I hate CompUSA. I used to work for one. They're on my list of corporations to take over and bulldoze to the ground. :mad:
