Difference between old and new ea82T's

I read on a different website that the EA82T changed for the '87 MY. Is this true, and if so, what's the difference, and is it worth it to get a 1987 or newer for that reason? Thanks.

i own a pre- 87 1/2 XT. are u thinking about engine names or actual differences between the 2?

According to this chart the earlier one has 4 fewer HP. I know this isn't much, but if there are differences with the engine that make the newer one better I'd like to get the newer one. Thanks.

the main physical difference is that the 85 and 86(as well as ea81t) use a mechanical distributor with a seperate knock control unit. the 87 an up has a crank angle sensor type optical distributor, and the ecu does all the anti-knock stuff.

ither than that, they are the same parts wise. we are going to put an 86 turbo engine in an 88 wagon, the wiring harness for the intake should be the same, we will use the 88's distributor
