Basic Rules For Driving

1. Turn signals will give away your next move. A real driver never uses them.

2. Under no circumstances should you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, or the space will be filled in by somebody else putting you in an even more dangerous situation.

3. Crossing two or more lanes in a single lane-change is considered going with the flow.

4. Remember that the goal of every driver is to get there first, by whatever means necessary.

5. Never, ever come to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one expects it and it will inevitably result in you being rear ended. If you want your insurance company to pay for a new rear bumper, come to a complete stop at all stop signs.

6. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. It's a good way to scare people entering the highway.

7. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as suggestions and are apparently not enforceable during rush hour.

8. A right lane construction closure is just a game to see how many people can cut in line by passing you on the right as you sit in the left lane waiting for the same jerks to squeeze their way back in before hitting the orange construction barrels.

9. It is traditional to honk your horn at cars that don't move the instant the light changes.

10. The faster you drive through a red light, the smaller the chance you have of getting hit.

No those are taken straight from the Toronto, ON drivers manual. Probably the worst drivers in the world. :(

I beg to differ! Those orange barrels are the PA state bush and the little cones: the state flower!!! Oh, the Heinz Ketchup bottle is NOT the only bottleneck Pittsburgh is known for!!!

Those came directly from the safe driving manual for Pittsburgh

Well take a trip up to T.O. and I bet you'll be beggin to get back to Pen after a couple days. :p I've driven in quite a few states (OH, NY, NC, SC, FL, TX, IN, TN) and I have to say Toronto drivers are the rudest, most ignorant, assholes I've ever seen on the streets.

Ok well I have lived in the States for over 30 years. Driven in 46 of them. They all have pretty piss poor driver ethics. Now put your butt on a plane and come on over to New Zealand for a visit.

Kiwi's are great people they really are, but put them behind the wheel of a car and it is like jeckel and hyde !

Also the faster you go the better chance you have of saying
" What red light ????? I did not see any redlight just a white light "

Las Vegas has quite a few drivers who went to school by these rules.

Actually, every single one of these rules is quite good except 8 and 10.
However I recommend reading the "alternate road code" in the latest DRIVER magazine, in the mail section. That one is 100% true for NZ drivers and police :D

I see, where was the Audi struck?????

I see, where was the Audi struck?????

I was standing at a red light on the Fortunes rd - Pakuranga Highway intersection in Auckland, waiting to turn right onto the highway citybound. I was in the left lane, beside me was a Mazda Titan light truck.
Around that time there was a inorganic rubbish collection in the Half Moon Bay area, therefore a large amount of people came in vans from Otara/Glen Innes scavenging the junk. A Toyota Hiace van with a Samoan family and a van full of crap had the misfortune to ram me in the back at speed, and pushing me out onto the highway where another driver in the middle/left lane(he was in the process of lane-changing)struck me in the right corner. Luckily the other driver was going slowly since he was about to turn left into the Shell petrol station (directly on the corner of the 2 roads, to the left of where I was standing initally. The result - an Audi V8 with a non - existant tail end and the rear part of the roof gone slightly "wavy", a destroyed front right wing and damaged bonnet lid and dislocated bumper. The geometry of the car body was also altered, I have a full report but I wont go into all the details since that would take long to write up and honestly I dont feel like going all over it again.
A Toyota Caldina station wagon with a bent bonnet lid, bumper, smashed up optics and left wing curving inwards.
A Toyota Hiace with a bent bull bar and moderately damaged front end.

Moral:
1) Insurance is good. Neither I nor the driver of the Caldina neither the driver of the Hiace had insurance. We have the full police report and its obvious that he is at fault, but they are on Income Support and have no money. Their phone is unanswered (I suspect its disconnected) and when me and the driver of the Caldina went to visit them they didnt let us in. The house is a council flat in a block of flats in Glen Innes, with a crack in the window beside the front door and a filthy barking mut tied on a leash to the post holing up the carport roof. Its pretty clear that we dont have much chance of seeing any money.

2) Warrant of Fitness is good.
The Police that drove the Hiace off the road said the brakes were extremely worn and deemed it unsafe to drive by itself and called a second tow truck to pick up the Hiace. Its warrant of Fitness showed 5, 2001. The little plastic holder where the registration ticket is supposed to be was empty.

3) Slowing down at the lights is good. Self explanatory.

What really pisses me off is those who leave the turn signal on all day. That will really throw some people off.

I just hate it when I'm waiting to pull out onto a road, and there's only one oncoming car stopping me from pulling out, with a whole batch of traffic not far behind, but enough that I could safely pull out if he wasn't there. Then they turn into where I'm coming out of with no signal, and I lose the chance to go that I would have used if he'd been signaling and letting me know he was turning. BAH!

That totally pisses me off too! Or when they pull out in front of you and then drive 2 miles an hour when there’s no cars behind you and they could have waited until you’d gone past!!

My 2 pet peeves:
Anyone that pulls out and makes me hit the brakes (ie not accelerating fast enough, so that when I reach them they are only doing like 20 kph), I get so pissed. I time my braking so that I end up about 2 inches from their rear bumper, usually scares the crap out of them and they don't do it again.

The other is people (usually in automatics, since it requires effort in a standard) that "creep" ahead at a red light. They'll be stopped for 20 seconds, then let off the brake and move ahead 2 feet, then stop for another 20 seconds, then do it again. You can't go anywhere, so sit your ass still! If they are at the front of the line they usually end up creeping the whole red, then taking another 5-10 seconds to start moving once it does turn green

Had that happen to me too. I was going back to my job after a delivery and I was doing a good 45 mph when a garbage truck enters the highway suddenly and then stops in the middle of the highway. Because I'm driving a 10 ft. delivery truck, the stopping distance is longer than a normal car. When I realized that I was going to hit the truck, I risked myself by passing it on the two-lane highway with absolutely no idea if traffic is coming the other way. Probably the worst driving experience for me.
