hey sistas an bros. i got a question about an amp for my small system in my 1988 ranger. this is the story... i went to pep boys yesterday an bought small set of duel 6 1/2 inch subs with high performance tweeters. i bought this little set in a speaker box, and on the box it said that max power wattage was 300. very small i know but im workin on it. so beacuse the system was only 300 watt max an my JVC cd player already powers 200... i didnt buy an amp. but today i was talkin on the phone to my girlfriend's brother. he has a chevy cav with duel 10's an some size amp. i never really took the time to look at his amp. but while on i was on the phone wit him he said that i need to but a small amp because i might blow the speakers with underpower. ive never heard of this happening but i thought id try to ask on this site. anybody know if this is true or not.

It is likely to happen.
Best thing to do is to get a small one.

i can tell u that u dont want to be takeing more then 300 watts total from your truck for a system cuz it will kill your lighting. and u can blow your speakers from under power but only if u never run the power to them. like if u turn your sound down alot u may as well just turn it off. and if your radio has a mute button never use it cuz the power will still be running to them and it will brake them fast cuz they cant put out the power thats comeign to them. also get a kapasator makes it so u can control how much power your system will take. and maybe a new altinator if u r running on stock with out power locks and windows. if u have pw pl then u r good on alt. and also you need a amp either way u look at it other wise u will kill your stario. cuz u will be bridgeinf off of the rear lines to put those subs in. thats only 25 watts for speaker then and then you runing the fronts at 50 each. the subs whould kill your stario. but i whouldnt exsead 300 watts max on total system. trust me i know these things. i build boxes and install for alot of ppl here and make goood money doing it.

pishaw Im pullin 1800 watts for my subs and 750 for my 6spk surround. I run a 4g main and split to 8g supply tjrough a 1f cap on a stock 87 alternator with no issues. Suggestion. ditch the 300 watt 6"s do it once do it right. stay stock till your ready. Also for the record you will NEVER damage a stereo or a sub by under powering it. I promise.

Yeah, you will. Not having enough power blows speakers, not having too much.

your dash unit only puts out 50w per chanel MAX! that means only 50w to each speaker.those subs are designed to run at abt 150w max each. you should always have the max amps match on speaker and amp for best performance.

you won't damage a speaker by under powering it. it will just not sound very good.
