black plastic

in my 2003 silverado, there is this good-for-nothing pocket in my dash where the transfer case buttons go on the 4 wheel drive model.

I want to get a piece of flat plastic to put there instead of the pocket. i want it so i can put a switch for my amp, and the stupid light & buttons they have to put in when i get my alarm.

I don't want them anywhere else on the dash, and i can't think of a better place.

Anybody know where I can get some plastic to cut up and jerry-rig up in there instead of that good-for-nothing pocket??

you could get some clear plastic from Lowes. It's back beside the lumber dept here. I would use that, as it's the cheapest thing I can think of, so mistakes are ok. You can sand it and paint it after you get it cut for all of your switches. I'm planning on making a switch plate for my neons when I get'em, and that's what I plan on doing. Hope that helps.

You don't have to paint it. I know one of the custom shops around here will redo a whole interior and take all the cloth out and redo it in vinyl. They usually end up doing switch plates like that too, using the same material, but sometimes spraying on some 3M spray adhesive and sticking some vinyl around it. the switches usually cover up any rough edges around the switch holes...if not, they can fix that too.

ok what hes talking about is acrylic which is the same as plexy glass i strongly recoment agenst it if your going to paint it. acrylic is to slipery and non porus. if your going to paint it you will need to take some low grit sand paper to it(like 110 grit) and rough the hell out of it then put on a shitload of primer to fill the holes and then sand it flat with 400-800 grit. trust me on this i work with alot of plastics as i do alot of custom machining on this material and also polycarbonate. id recomend a piece of abs god impact resistance comes in black allready and is easy to sand round and get a nice smooth shiny look from.

I just knew it was working in the shop's cars. I didn't realize that it would take so much work to get it to hold paint though. I wouldn't mind the work though if it saved me money or I couldn't find the ABS. Thanks for setting me straight though.

the abs is about a dollar more expensive for a 12x12 @ 0.125(1/8") thick than a piece of acrylic 12x14 @.98(2/25") this piece would also have to be shipped but you can get primer and all sorts of stuff that you need at the same time. from www.mcmaster.com any plastic shop should have it also
