Hey guys, I am new to the mitsubishis, and i am looking to buy a 3000Gt non turbo, the SL I guess. The car I end up getting will probably be a 91-95 with around 100K miles. I would like a car that will be a dependable daily driver, but something that I can put some bolt on performance mods on. I know any car over 100K will need things replaced , water pumps, alternators, Etc. but is this in general a reliable car that if taken care of can go 150K miles or more without major problems? Are they expensive to repair? I had heard bad things about the VR4 as far as reliability and maintanance costs, so I didn't know if that went for the SL also. And how is the availability of aftermarket bolt on performance parts for the SL? What is the difference between the SL and the Base? And lastly how fast is the SL stock? I read 222 hp, which sounds pretty good to start with, but I couldn't find any performance stats. Thanks for the help guys, any other tips would be appreciated,
Heff

I don't know much about the add-ons for the SL models. I do know they are less complex then the VR4 which means that there is less that can go wrong. The frame, moldings and interior are the same as the VR4 so the replacement parts for all those are identicle. The engine is basically the same which means the price to replace the waterpump, plugs etc. will also be the same.
You should stop in www.3si.org and stop in the forums for the front wheel drive models. You'll get some good information from there.

3S cars can be relaible well over 150K miles. I know a few guys in 200K+ cars. It's just like most cars, take care of them and they'll take care of you. One thing I'd dafinantly suggest is replacing the oil pump with an aftermarket one. The oil pressure in the stock one blows. And of course follow oil changes religiously. There are aftermarket parts out there but not as many as, say for an Eclipse or basically any car still in production. More and more are coming on the market though. Exhaust, intakes, tranny, brake, suspension upgrades...all available.
Difference between the SL and base is basically HP. If I remember right, the 222 number is right compared to the 170ish on base models. Not sure on exact repair costs.....new tranny cost me $2400. Make sure it has had the 60K tuneup done. Get it, you'll enjoy it.

The SL or base are very reliable cars. The base has less options than the SL and doesnt have ECS. 91-96 they both had the same engine 222hp 0-60 in around 7, 1/4 in high 15 low 16. In 97-99 the base picked up the SOHC 170ish hp engine because the Stealth was discontinued. They however use a slightly differnt body than the VR-4, but it isnt noticeable unless you try to do suspention or drivetrain work.

...and if we wanted to hear an ass talk we would have farted!!! PISS OFF!!
(although i do like American cars... and if it wasnt for American auto-giants the japanese wouldnt have the car market that they have today, cuz we set them up with it after we defeated them in WW2 so's the country could have a thriving market and have some means of income to repair their war-torn country. that said, in defense of my patriotism... i still love imports!! and Mitsubishi in conjuction with Dodge makes some of the best cars ever concieved!! hail the 3/S line!!! ) oh yeh, and ugly... ur a homo!!

I dont think dodge had to much to do with the design of the 3S, except for badging and a couple body panels. But the 3000GT looks better IMO.

yeh... i think that from 91-93 the Stealth "R/T"s looked better, save for the weenie spoiler, but from 94 on up the 3000gt's looked better. just IMO also didnt the Stealths have the optional sport top? but the VR-4s had the active aero... which i think is alot cooler than not. but their both badass cars!! although ive seen alot better deals on R/T TT's than on VR-4's, is there any particular reason why ya'll would know of, that the R/T's would be cheaper than the VR-4's ??? the only reason i can think of is cuz mabey their more domestic then the VR-4's but their like the same car so i cant see why that would be much of a diff... oh well i still love em both

The Stealth never had a sport top that I know of, but im not exactly sure what you mean by that. And stealths are cheeper cause they are "domestic".

In 95 and 96 a several hundred 3000 Spyders were made but there were never any manufactured sport top models of the Stealth. There were some custom chop tops done that look pretty good though.

Ahhh, sport top = convertable
there are a few 3000 soft tops floating around also, I think somewhere around 7-8 that are known on 3si, and somewhere in the 40's for the stealths.
