Taurus erratic fuel gauge

Own 2 2001 Taurus's. Experienced both erratic fuel gauge (reads more than in tank) and check engine light. Told by dealer the check engine light should go off after the car is filled 3 or 4 times. no explanation about gauge. Both cars experience front end shaking on higher speeds.
Any ideas?
