6 bolt has a greatl less chance of gettin crank walk but the seven bolt has a grater chance of getting crankwalk...
the 6 bolt is found on 90-94 dsm.. i think..
and the 7 bolt is found on the 95+dsm..

i believe the 6 bolt is actually 90-92.5, then 7-bolt is from then on
they changed to the 7-bolt in may or june of production in 1992

It refers to the number of bolts holding the flywheel to the crankshaft. And yes it was late 92 that they made the change.

Specifically , April-May of 92. Every 1G after that , T and NT , had a 7-bolt motor. '95+ was when they started using the 420A for NT cars. This all information that can be accessed thru any local DSM club , or dsm.org. Its been talked about extensively here ,so I would suggest searching for something first.
This place is getting more like "Toonerz" everyday. :screwy:

I'm all toonered out... I'm a wiseman there, and I havent been there in weeks, lol. I believe the actual change was closer to july of 92. Most automakers retool over the July 4th shutdown (the only time they ever shut down typically). Either way, when they retool in the summer is when they are actually making the NEXT years cars. So the change was intended for the 93 model year. In fact, I have nly ever heard of one 7 bolt 92. And it was a July car if I recall. But always check. See the vfaq for how to tell easily by looking at the oil pan...

do u DSMers change the flywheel and the crankshaft to 6-bolt instead of 7 bolt on the 93+ DSMs? im pretty sure people have, but i dont kno about this problem yet. i want to kno how to fix it when i get a DSM. Will it be hard fixing the 7-bolt to a 6-bolt?

You need the whole block. They chnaged that as well, and the rods. The most common budget build up consists of the 6 bolt block, crank, "big" rods, and 2g pistons. Thats the best mix of the stock parts, but the rods need the small end narrowed to fit the 2g pistons. There is a vfaq with the dimensions the machine shop will need to make it happen. MANY people do the conversion to the 6 bolt motors. I've done a couple in 2Gs myself.

is it a pretty up front swap? like pull ur 7-bolt swap your parts to a 6-bolt and drop it in? and where is a good place to find 6-bolt engines?

If you are refering to putting a 6 bolt in the 2g cars, see www.magnusmotorsports.com, tech articles, 1gina2g. When I did my first swap, I found that all the info I needed was right there. RRE has a good page on how to set up the 1g CAS as well. Its a good deal of work, but if you're comfortable doing head gasket swaps, or timing belt jobs, then it should be doable.
