Did you try asking a Nissan dealer? They can look your VIN and pretty much tell you everything you need to know.

you can tell by looking by the rear left tire, in the back of it. there should be either a yellow or orange sticker there. if there is, you have a lsd

some stickers fall off.......

THE ONLY CERTAIN WAY to be 100% sure that you have a LSD is to open up your differential cover and take a look inside to see what you got......I say this is the only 100% way because someone could have swapped out the lsd or such.... your lsd could be worn and some "tests" people do to see if it is one, like spinning one wheel, will not work on a worn out lsd.....

so open it up and see what it looks likes......

since I don't have hours to search for actual R200 differential photos, they are around.....

heres what an open diff would look like, notice it has more of an 'open' appearance and u see more gears

this would looks more like a limmited slip unit.....it has a bulkier design, its enclosed in a casing and you don't see big spider gears in the open like you would on an open diff...

If you're trying to find this out on your s13 then I would just buy a new LSD probably. The liquid based limiteds that cars have stock usually works less and less effective as more miles and age is added to the car...eventually becoming so lethargic that it acts like an open nearly any time you would need it closed. The only advantage they have is that they are smoother when changing from since the liquid doesn't change to a solid immediately. On the other hand an aftermarket lsd will have instant closed operation, but it won't be as smooth.

As others have said the only real way to check and see if your car has a limited slip is to open it up. To check and see if it's working right you can go to a parking lot when it's a little damp or wet out and stop the car, cut the wheel and then power over...hop out of the car and check out and see if you tires burnout out or just one.

Pick your poison.

Incorrect. Not ALL SE's had VLSD. Mine doesn't. Just jack the rear end of the car up and spin one of the rear wheels. If the wheel you're not spinning turns the same direction, it's VLSD. If not, it's open. Simple, it doesn't even take a minute.

that's complete crap... the se's only came with an lsd as an option. and no one ever got it because they didn't know what it was or how it works...

very very few se's have it stock.

you can tell if you have an lsd, you can take corners going about 40 and can really take off from a light.

supposedly all canadian 240s that are 1991 + have vlsd... there is a orange sticker that says VLSD on it either on the top of the DIff housing or where mynismo said. on the top of the diff housing is less likely to be suseptable to the elements and fall off on its own, but it probably does and has happened.

Well I didn't see anything in the first post about this being for specifically an S13, it just says "240SX."
As far as testing for VLSD, I'll be redundant and tell you just to use my method of jacking up the rear end and spinning the tires. I honestly can't see pulling the diff and removing the cover just to see what kind of diff you have.

Didn't only the '87+ 300ZX Turbo have the VLSD? It could be '86, I'm not totally sure on that. But the version on the S13 isn't "beefed" up in any way. It's the same R200V unit used in the Z31 Turbo, Z32 NA, S13, and S14. I know the final drive is the same for all of them at 4.08:1.

sometimes, and especially when you abuse it, your diff will stop functioning properly.....

when this happens, say a high mileage car or such... you jack it up, it might not do what it is supposed to do, therfore spinning tires isn't the 100% correct answer. To truly determine what something is.... especially junkyard R200's... taking it apart removes all doubt instantly.

edit

yes I believe when they had a mild makeover of the car in 87 that the turbo models also got the LSD...

But the thing is, spinning the tires will tell you whether or not the locking properties are still there. Just opening the pumpkin cover to see the guts isn't a promising way to see if it still works(I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong). I'd say if you KNOW for a fact the car has a VLSD (ie, J30, 300ZX NA), jack the rear up to see if the diff still locks. If the diff is off of the car, then by all means open the cover and scope it out.

it must have been 87 since my 86 z31 has 3:53 gears in it
