2000 cherokee transmision not shifting and need fuse diagram

:shakehead My Cher ran fine last nite when I came home and this morning it won't shift out of first fear. The check engine lite is on. Any ideas, please let me know. Also, I am amazed at the genius of jeep. My owners manual says that the fuse diagram is behind the fuse box cover, the fuse box cover says to check the owners manual. If anybosy has it, I sure could use it. Thanks in advance :biggrin:

I have a 91 cherokee..sometimes the shifting has been pretty stiff..but today it was very hard to get it into first or second gear..especially first..at one stop light i had to put it into third because no amount of force could get it into either first or second..any ideas?

The other thing i should note..is the shifting gets harder the hotter the engine gets

I would check out the synco mesh in the tranny. It also sound like you may need new fluid in the tranny. If it gets worse as it gets hotter, sounds like bad tranny fluid. Do you get any grinding when it does work. If so it could be the clutch. The info on your posts so far just say it won't go into gear. get more specific details. will it go into second or only first. one of the post said third. In any case the tranny needs to be checked. I am not a big tranny fan. it is a pain in the back side sometimes. you may want to take the big jeep in. that is all i can suggest with the amount of info you have provided.

My Jeep seems to shift fine when it is cold..but after 20 minutes or so of driving the shifting gets stiff..the only time i had trouble getting it into first or second gear was when i had to ride the clutch for awhile in a trafffic jam...It is a 5 speed...occaionally it grinds when putting it into reverse..the clutch fluid was fine but havent had the tranny checked..i just picked up the truck used with 147000km

hmm. When it is cold it is fine. I think you should look at the tranny. I have a book I can check in when I get home but I think when the sync (think a ma jig) gets hot it can play some havic. If you have some experiance with trannys there is a tranny book that is really good that you can use but I can not remember what it is called. Also the haynes books are great as well. If I get some more info I will pass it along.

I had the same thing happen with my 85' Mustang Gt. The clutch was getting worn down and the cable was not tight enough. As the clutch got warm the tranny got harder to shift, so I tightened the cable up some and the problem was solved. The cable started to slacken up a bit about two months later and before I could tighten it up it snapped and blew my clutch to bits. As for the fuse diagram, you will probably have to get one from the dealership. My 2000 xj is the same way. Or try a repair garage, they probably have it and will make you a copy.

my 98 xj does the exact oposite, it dosn;t like to go into 2 gear when its cold but, once I get driving it it shifts fine.

I had the same problem with my 88 Laredo. Change your trany fluid. For some reason I have run into many 5 speeds with atf fluid in case. It will shift fine while cold, but once tranny fluid heats up the atf fluid is like water and tranny will not shift right. Most shops will refil your manual case with atf fluid which is cheaper. No Good Most jeep manual trannys need gear oil which is much thicker.

I realize that this is an old stream of posts. But don't you think that the problem still exists today??? If I have a solution for the problem, why not post it for future searches by people with a similar problem?? When I have a problem with one of my vehicles, I frequently search all forums that I can to find for a solution be they new posts or old. I hope that my post helps viewers out there and don't tell me what to do....
