white primer over grey primer

Would white primer cover and go well over grey primer? I am painting my Fairlady 240z bright red and I sprayed the body in grey primer. Now that I read this thread I am thinking that I should have used white primer instead of grey. If I stick with grey will it affect the overall color a lot? Thanks.

You will find the grey will be fine but the red shade will be darker. Use a white primer if you want a bright red, all depends what finish you want. On my recent Orange RX7 i used grey primer and it came out dark orange so I respayed with white and it came out nearly luminous orange in the end.

You can spray white primer over grey primer without a problem, white primer is opaque to you won't see any grey primer under it and it will give you the brighter red.

be careful of spraying too many coats though- white primer is fairly thick to make it more opaque so it might cover up some detail if you are not careful, and it might be a good idea to clean out the panel lines with a hobby knife or toothpick to sharpen them up after youve primered it.

You should definately spray white primer on there if you want to get a bright red finish. I made the mistake of painting red over grey primer and ended up looking like a dark red, almost brown. I did it over again with white primer and it was so much brighter. Whenever your painting a light color the primer must be white.

Well over here in Australia i cant find tamiya white primer, i have grey but not white.

Would it be ok to prime with a grey primer and then give it 2 coats of white tamiya TS and then spray red? :sly:

A couple of coats of white paint would be my choice too. Tamiya's white "Fine Surface Primer" is nice stuff and doesn't build too quickly, but PlastiKote white primer is some thick stuff - builds quick and will bury details in no time!

So, to answer your question, a couple of coats of the Tamiya white over the grey should be a great base for your red.

If you have Tamiya pink, you could use that as a base over the gray. Ferraris in red are primed in pink.
