The real point of "wings"

Ok i may be wrong but arnt wings designed to keep the ass of your car pushed to the ground because of wind forcing it down? and thats only at high speeds like 150-200 mph. My real question is if the above info is true then why do FWD cars have them!

...b/c there are alot of ricers out there.
the real point of wings on 90% of cars is purely aesthetic.

ive seen some stock wings that were rediculous also.
but most people add them on to look cool when they serve no purpose.

i guess to answer the question it's because real road cars take turns at a high rate of speed and it's good to have the ass end stable and planted. and goin down str8's at very high speeds would be a good situation to have the ass end planted. but on regular cars, it's just for looks :nono:

Well then if you think about it, what are ground effects for?? They are to keep you from floating around at high speed also, but i doubt that most people with ground effects are doin 150 alll the time, So are you saying ground effects are ricey to.

yes :thefinger technically it could be ricey, but the thing about not being rice is doing it in good nature...

Ground effects are so people can make their Honda Civics look like spaceships. You seriously think a $300 fiberglass body kit actually helps your cars peformance in any way, shape, or form? You think that people who designed these kits actually spent time and money doing R&D in a wind tunnel to see what works best? C'mon man.. Body kits are purley asthetic.
Wings are the same.. Nobody reasearches areodynamics when they're making wings, why would they? They don't need to. They just need to make products that will make your car look faster, and people will buy them assuming that these products somehow do help your car. There are some spoilers out there obviously that are designed for aerodynamics, but most of them are just wings, and most of the ricers out there rocking wings don't even have cars that can get up to 150mph, let along sustain that speed so they can make use of them.

It would be good to point out that there is a huge difference between a "wing" and a "spoiler"...
A spoiler does perform a function, even on a FWD car... It's not there to create down-force, it is there to "spoil" the airflow at the back of the car... Basically, it creates some turbulence in the air-flow so that there doesn't end up being a vacuum of sorts at the rear of the car which would effectively slow it down a bit...
A wing is solely to provide downforce, and I'm sure that even the stupidest looking wings DO provide downforce, but are usually just bought for looks (especially on a FWD), like mine LOL.

About 150km/h the wings kick in - and yes, ground effects kits are 90% pose, not actuall "effect".
FYI - Mugen released 2 variants of a rear wing on their '76 GT 1200 civic, hanging off the back of the car. It was there for effect. Jackson Racing actually copied the wide-body Civic kit with the wild wing - but a road miniture version was also available. The whole kit was there to provide stability in a 1200cc 150bhp (R3 spec) 550 kilo car (stripped and caged). The R1 120bhp version only used the small wing. Anyone who's driven a SBC at 170km/h will know that they get very light in the rear end (I can lift the back of a road-spec car by myself) and need the stability - especially with such a narrow track.

useless on a sedan or coupe then by that logic, because the air gets diffused ... unlike a hatch where there is a larger area behind the car to get caught up in.
My friends mom put a spoiler on her accord coupe and i think its one of the gayest things they spent money on ... sure it looks nice but she could have tinted the windows (which she wants to do because she does a lot of night driving and it would reduce the glare, and she parks in the sun all day)

i'm not a big fan of the accord coupes, they look cool but they remind me of a mix between a Saturn and like a Cougar or something
