I am looking for information on this problem as well. I have a 1993 Limited and the front differential will leak down to about 1" below the fill-hole (where the fluid should be equal to the edge of the hole to indicate proper level).
I have cleaned and inspected aroung the interior part of the frame where the differential case cover fits inside. I am able to see the red gasket material filled all around.
I do see visible indications of leakage occuring near the axle... as if the fluid is leaking from the seating seal that is around the axle and at the axles entrance to the differential case.
I propose that this would be the cause of the low fluid level, leakage when filled to specifications.
Gfm, does your vehicle still leak? And if so, are you able to see evidence of leakage aroung the front-right axle?
