Revell BMW M1 short inbox review (/w pics)

I just bought Revell's new BMW M1 Procar and I thought some of you might be interested to see what's in the box.

It seems that the kit is a re-release of Esci's BMW M1. This doesn't matter though as the parts seem quite finely detailed (considering they date back to the early(?) eighties). Body parts are moulded in white and I think the body shape looks right although I haven't checked too thoroughly it against any references.

Some parts show the age of moulds. The front bumper was the worst having some rough spots and flash on it. Most of the parts however are clean and details are sharp, so this is not a big problem.

Detail parts are moulded in black. Kit includes engine and I think it can be made acceptable with little detailing. Interior needs a rollcage made from scratch as there is no rollcage included in the kit.

Tires are big and little slicks. Other side of the front tires has Dunlop printed on it and other side has Goodyear. Rears have Goodyear text on one side and the other has no text at all.

Wheels are multispokes. I had hoped the kit would have had the dish type wheels too, but unfortunately it hasn't.

Glass parts are thin and clear. Side door windows are missing, but they are easy to make from clear plastic sheet if you want to have the door windows closed.

Decals look like they have been printed by Cartograph of Italy and the sheet looks really high quality. Red-blue-purple areas are not included on the sheet and they have to be painted if you want to make the car on the boxtop.

I've decided to build mine as the one that competed in Tour de Corse rally in '83. Studio27 has released atleast four sheets for M1 so there are nice livery options available already.

good to see another fine re-release from Revell, and this time in 1/24th also!

Thanks a lot for the review, but I have a request... could you take a pic from the dashboard and the doorpanels please... maybe later, when painted or primered... as I m considering making mine factory stock (I know I have to build my own rims, but they're basically just flat dished)

Thanks .

I just bought that kit as well two days ago.
I am thinking of doing either the "Map of France" version (Studio 27 decals) or a Jägermeister version.
The only downside are the rims, I think. They are not "see through" so you can't see the disc brakes. Does anyone have an idea what rims I could use instead?
Plus, I guess, taking the engine out of a Fujimi M635CSI Enthusiast Series would really enhance the model... I'll give it a thought!

Some good ref's here:http://www.bmwworld.com/models/vintage/m1.htm
So, is it the ESCI or the Aoshima kit?
I only have the ESCI street car kit to refer to...

thanks a lot for those galleries...

I would like to see more of the ART CAR, I simply love it, but sofar have found hard luck .. only two pictures of it... if anybody making this kit, would stumble on some pics, albeit single or galleries, would he or she be so kind to PM me about it , or even post it ?

Thanks

Olivier,
I don't have a digi-cam with me right now, but I just checked dashboard and doorpanels: they look very factory stock like!
Dashboard still has all air vents, doorpanel has armrest and handles for opening the door & windows.
Dunno about the M1 Art Car, though, sorry. I know there's a decal sheet for the 320i Group 5 Art Car (Roy Liechtenstein, I think) but M1, no idea!

I didn't know that anyone even made any BMW's. Looks like a cool kit. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the review Mikko. Will definitely pick one of these up if I see it.

Does the rear wing in the kit look right for a rally version or will it need some work, like the interior and wheels?

Here are the pics of door panels, center console and dash(without meter pod):

Oliver, I don't know if it's easier to convert Procar to a standard road car or to find an original Esci roadcar M1. Those fender flares need to go and front bumper needs modifying, plus the wheels are completely different.

Phil, the wing is mainly alright for rally cars, I compared it to pics of TdC M1:s. You'll only have to fill and sand the edges of the wing supports round because there an odd ridge on the Revell part. I don't know if this applies to all Procars or only to the rallycars.

thanks a lot !

I think I just will build the procar version firstly, and secondly make a replica of one of my favorite artist's work, the ARTCAR!

This is without a doubt from an ESCI mould. I have the original ESCI kit and this one and they are exactly the same. it will build into a fine looking model, with a full engine.

Revell seem to be doing this a lot recently, aquiring old moulds from Hasegawa (Lancia Stratos, Subaru Impreza, Audi Quattro) and ESCI (this BMW M1 kit and I think a Porsche Carrera is on the way). Smart move in a way as they are not bad kits at all...at least 10 times better than original Revell products IMO. However, i still look forward to their 1/12 Ferrari kit due within the next couple of months i think.

Does it look like you can convert the rims over to a fujimi or Tamiya rim?
Looks like a kewl kit, wonder if Hobby Lobby will be stocking this one?

Those decals are 2800 yen as opposed to a standard 1800 yen for other Studio 27 releases. I wonder how many sheets are included.
