There are two versions of this
I bought the 80's version (US MANGA CORPS) with the stupid 3 minute robot thing which is a pain in the ass
Absolutely great though the fighting is cool and Baki does a Bruce Lee type thing.
Now there is a more recent one late 90's i think and it tries to follow the original 45minute anime. The only thing is the first series he is a 13 year old kid and his father is some great fighter (psycho looney hard man). His mother gets killed (I have no idea why they added this) and she was a bit of a loon. (nothing of this was precent in the original) Second season (has a couple of the original characters) It was no where near as cool. Baki comes off as a miserable bastard no Bruce Lee type fighting no learning the moves of his opponents (a subtle thing in the first series) there a stupid Ghost Monkey thing as well in the first series where a guy cleans his wound by using gunpoweder to blow himself up a bit (bloody ridiculous) Really ridiculously gory a guy breaks his arm to shit for no particular reason and doesn't flinch. Almost nothing to do with Martial Arts. Original way better. Although i do like the old Aikido guy.
The Kung Fu guy is pretty cool and completely beats the living piss outta a Karate guy.
Not got a thing on the original (which i think was a pilot)
Anyone seen it? I bought this thing ages ago

As far as I can tell, the series has no relation at all to the movie, except maybe for the title. Haven't seen the original movie yet, so I wouldn't know, but character design, circumstances, etc. are so different the series might as well be another one.

the movie thing is like 45minutes so its more a pilot and i think some guys watched the original and said hmmm lets make a series about it.
Then they wrote a god awful script including most of the original characters and a lot of new ones. It isn't too similar to the pilot untill you get onto the second series though.
