Ok, I feel stupid askng this but how do you check the automatic transmission fluid in a 1999 golf? Isn't there a dip stick like the one for the oil?

I believe that your Golf has the same type of transmission as my '97 Golf Cabrio. The answer is that there is no transmission dip stick and no way for the owner to check the fluid. The Volkswagen dealer connects a special machine that can check and add fluid (I haven't even been able to find the fluid except to have the dealer add it. They only buy it in bulk drums that connect to the machine, no quart containers are available from them.) Sorry.

Used & I install is $1500, rebuilt and they install is $2800. If you suspect low fluid, get it checked before transmission parts are damaged by lack of fluid. It's a rip off but the alternative is worse.

Thanks for the info...I was afraid of that. Damn cars nowadays - you gotta be a computer technician just to change a sparkplug. They do it on purpose so we can't do even the simplest things. I'm suprised we can still check the oil without going to tech school!
Thanks again......vicki
