i have a few newbie questions

Hey,
i just had a few quick questions for anyone who is interested in helping me out before i get my engine.
1. I see engines like the b16a2 with 170hp but only 112lbs of trq and engines like the B18b with 140hp (maybe 130hp, i forget) and about 127lbs. which would be more beneficial if i plan on doing alot of engine work but don't plan on turbo'ing?
2. compression; i see engines saying "10:2" or "9:1". if there is a simple way to explain compression i would appreciate it. i have a feeling it may be a bit diffacult to explain in which case it's no big deal.
3. rpm's; I have the idea that a higher redline is better, why is this?
i don't know too much i know :p
well, i guess that is all the questions i have for now.

compression is the fuel/air ratio in the combustion chamber
These are not true statements, please correct that.
disregarding force induction application and assuming they have the same gear ratio, if you want faster accelaration from stop, you should go with the higher torque engine. On the other hand, if you want higher max speed, you should go with the higher HP engine.
The higher rpm range means the engine can be run longer without shifting, therefore it will safe some time while others needs to shift. But this depends on the einge's protental.

1. well the b18 to start is better for turboing cuz of its lower compression, it also has higher torque, torque wins street races, not horsepower. the b16 however is a better flowing motor and will handle Natural Aspiration better than the b18 will, stock anyway., obviosuly you can spend dough on either motor and one will beat the other.
so in conclusion b16 for NA, b18 for boost.
2. compression ratio is very easy to understand. it is the measure of the air/fuel mixture inside the cylinder, the ratio from when the piston is at the highest point of its travel(TDC) to the lowest point(BDC).
example, say you have a glass of water that is 10oz, you manage to crush that same amount of water into a space thats only 1oz, your ratio would be 10:1, get it?
3. higher rpms isnt better, it justs sounds cooler, anyway, if your car cant produce power at such high rpms then having a high redline does nothing for you. take a b16 civic si, it redline at 8500rpm and makes power at like 7800 for its 160hp, but a camaro has a 6500rpm redline and makes power at like 6000rpm before it starts to lose it.
having a high redline is mostly based on the fact of where your cams are making power, not much else.
