any thoughts on setting up a paypal donate account? I am sure some people wouldent mind given ya a few bucks if they got it to help with the server considering we dont have pop ups and the rest of that gay shit that most big sites do...just a thought

I have been considering this as of late to generate money to pay for another server, which will cost ~$7000.

But, what kind of interest would the members have in doing this?

I was thinking a monthly recurring subscription payment of around $5 should not be too harsh for some extra nifty features that only paying members could get.
These would include:
Custom User Title Glowing username Ability to automatically ban another member if enough of the paying members leave negative feedback through the reputation button.

hm....sorry igor but i dont kinda agree with that. Because right know AF is kind of clean looking and such. And if alot of people start getting the Custom titles and they get glowing names. Then AF will look kind of cluttered. Why dont you try to make money, by selling some of AF's merchandise, such as AF t-shirts, car stickers, something to hang on the rearview mirrors. And so on.

This is just my opinion, you dont have to listen.

So you believe that a stright-up donation system with no merits is a better option?

FYI: AF merchandise is coming soon! :naughty:

no i dont mind merits, but i personally just dont agree with those one, becase everything'll seem too cluttered. Im trying to think of other merits, but i cant seem to think of any....

May i ask what kind of merchandise is coming?

I'm willing to pay for services that I enjoy. Given a few extra perks would be nice for the $$. Also, I would rather pay a lump sum annually then a few bucks monthly.

Igor, I am up for a service fee of $5 a month, hell I spend enough time on here to warrant $5 a month. I am also down for some AF merchendise...if you need shirts made let me know I can get them made cheap in south korea :D

:iagree: one of the other benefits, instead of glowing names - I wouldn't want to differentiate through that - can be the possibility to upload pictures. Paying Members can, others not fe.

I certainly wouldnt pay 5 bucks a month to go on Af, especially after the format change. Af WAS cool but now idk.... Merchandise is a cool idea.

Yes and no Igor. Remember $5 USD is or could be substantially more outside the US due to exchange rates.

While I agree that the paying membership should recieve benifits as that should be only natural, I am sure other things such as image posting custom signatures, etc. In other words if someone isn't a paying member no more custom signatures. Hot linking will always be a way around image inserts so maybe a firewall to prevent that unless you are inserted into a special account. Maybe class members as "Normal" and "Gold" would sound a bit more politically correct.

I am sure that there are many different avenues to go down but lets not give away your moderators powers to just anyone as that will create problems in the long run with abuse. Even paying members should never have the ability to self regulate. They should however carry certain weight in regards to other members especially normal members via the reputation system.

What I would suggest for "Gold" members are:

Custom Avitar: Normal members have a choice of standard avitars.

Custom Signatures: Allow Gold members up 15 lines of text/image size, Normal members 2 lines of text no images, even hotlinked.

Custom Titles: Bold and three colours to choose from say blue, green, gold, red, yellow, and Silver. (keep moderators seperate with glowing/Italic)

Posting limits: Gold members unlimited, normal members 15 posts per 24hr period.

Reputations: Gold members are able to use this where as normal members are not.

I agree with Razor on that. Also, I think something that would be easier for people to manage would be an annual charge rather than a monthly charge, this way it is taken care of and isnt going to be needing attention for another year. Id gladly pay :smokin:

I'd prefer to see it only add features for the paying members, not take away features for everyone and hold them for ransom.

Otherwise, it sounds like a great idea. Even just plain donations would work, IMO. I have more money to spare some months than others, so I'd prefer not to be billed...

i agree with every word said here. Razor's ideas are fine and all, but instead of rewarding paying members, you would be punishing non-paying members instead, and i don't really see the point to that...it would drive people away from AF if anything.

The donations fund for the server is now open.
All donating email addresses will be kept on record so that the donating users can be awarded for their help at a later time.

same here, all though if it came to that i guess i could pay $5 a month, but here comes the next problem, my parents watch CNN and all those other "buyer beware" things on spending money on the internet and are freaked out and yell at me when i even ask them to purchase some thing.

so i guess i wouldnt be on AF untill i turn 18 and get a credit card.

Hey...it all sounds good to me. You should do both, the subscription and the paypal account for donations.
