The Recording Industry Association of America sent out a batch of subpoenas to Internet service providers and universities, seeking the names of people it says it caught sharing songs over such networks as Kazaa. An association spokeswoman said the subpoenas were a prelude to lawsuits.

Also last week, two members of Congress introduced a bill that would make it easier to file criminal charges against people who offer commercial music and movies online. The bill, sponsored by Reps. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) and Howard L. Berman (D-Calif.) would make sharing a copyrighted file online a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.

The RIAA's legal campaign may be starting to scare folks. Nielsen/NetRatings said it measured a sudden drop in traffic on the Internet's popular file-sharing networks for the week ending July 6. The number of home Internet users who visited Kazaa and Morpheus dropped 15 percent from a week earlier, while traffic to the iMesh network tumbled 16 percent, the firm reported.
