Some of you may remember that I recently threw out my D15B3 and put in a ZC SOHC Dual Carb from '93 Integra into my 4G4D.

I drove around with the ZC like that for a while, thinking about what to do for more power. So I went to our local aftermarket performance shop, and remembered that the sidedraft carbs on my ZC are similar to ones used on Harleys. So on a whim I picked up a pair of small cone-filters for quite cheap.

My luck, they were a PERFECT fit, no modification needed, I only had to remove the mesh covers over the carb throats, and push the filters through the spacers, and bolt the spacers back on. So I left off the stock airbox and closed off some piping no longer needed.

The moment of truth, I took her out for a drive. She sounds like a demon. Now comes the part I found hard to believe: :eek7: :eek7:

I pulled up next to a 318is BMW at a traffic light. He revved me and we pulled off. The guy gave up after second gear, 'coz I was a full car's length ahead of him. But I think I was more in shock than he was... so I wanted to try again, and pulled up next to an Opel Monza GSI 1.8.

Same thing, I left him behind. Both those cars are known for being quite quick... and I spanked them. :shakehead

Now the really unbelieveable part: I pulled up next to another BMW, the dolphin-shaped M3... No I did not win, but I did manage to stick with him until halfway through 3rd gear. And he chirped his rear wheels on takeoff...!!!

Can a stock airbox really be THAT restrictive? I have heard that ZC engines LOVE carbs, but I had no idea that it would be like this...

318's known for being quick? I think not, there was a guy at school with one that had exhaust, and this other guy with a civic dx stock motor and i/h/e beat him so that doesnt suprise me ... but being able to stay with an m3 ... good job!

carbs suck! lol jp

The stock HP output with the dual carb ZC in the Integra is 108HP, same as a stock Si. But that is WITH a cat converter, which I run without, seeing as we in South Africa have no emissions regulations. So I figure I put out little more than an Si.

To say carbs suck is to admit you do not know them. Because you are comparing carbs to FI, but you can't really do that, they are two completely different things...

With FI, you can have economy AND performance... but only so much, before you need to add larger injectors, TB, chips, etc. All very costly.

With Carbs on the other hand, you can have economy OR performance. But a lot more than FI. And to rejet a carb and bore the throat is a lot cheaper than FI mods. And do not think that carbs have a habit of "detuning". That is crap, you have to basically take a hammer to carbs before the screw settings start changing.

So I can't have economy AND performance. How much does it cost you to mod or repair your FI system, compared to my carbs? And any serious racer will tell you for serious performance, you need MORE fuel and air. High performance and economy don't go together. And for performance, I do not mind paying extra $5.00 per tank.

From what I understand, the ZC SOHC has the same pistons and conrods as a ZC DOHC. So, higher compression, I think. Also, the cam is said to be aggressive, and I can feel it when she hits the 5000 rpm mark. She howls like a demon, but surges forward like a racehorse... it feels great :grinyes: :grinyes:

ok buddy lets not get ahead of yourself, i know i dont understand carbs that much but come on now, u have a sohc zc, that is not a performance engine. im sorry but i would rather pay more money for a dohc b series engine then have some ghetto carb sohc. i bet she howls like a demon when your driving but that doesnt make it fast.

Well, in this country we are somewhat limited for engine options and finances. Everything here is a lot more expensive than in the states or europe, so we make do with what we can, at a cost we can manage. Sure a B16 would be nice, so would FI. But then I might as well buy a brand new car, coz that is what it would cost here in my country. It sucks actually...

As for the SOHC ZC not being fast... true, compared to a b16, but then, not many motors are faster than a B16. But it is a hell of a lot faster than the D15 I was used to. And that just brings me to that old racer's saying: Money makes power...

I dare you to refute that...

ive noticed a slight surge around 3000 on mine ... probably cause its still running dx fuel injection ... it isnt just me either ... york2600 drove my car one time and also noticed it.

Oh and my old 73 mgb gt had dual carbs and they sucked in my experience dealing with em .... couldnt ever get the damn things to be in sync. Sad thing was my dads redneck friend who was into chevys and shit could do a better job than the mg specific shop here.
