Need info about clutch in Toyota

I had the clutch in my 1996 Toyota Corolla replaced yesterday. Although the car jerked a bit shifting up through the gears, I attributed this to the new clutch. Upon trying to start the car this evening, it WOULD NOT START! I got a loud whirring or clicking sound; like the starter had gone out. (This is definitely NOT the case.) Is there ANYTHING involved in the mechanics of replacing the clutch that could've caused this to happen? The car will NOT start...could the mechanic have failed to connect or adjust something properly, that may have jarred loose on the way home? The car started fine when I picked it up from the shop, but now it is dead in the water. Battery is OK. Bent of shape doesn't even begin to cover it. Thanks for your help.
