Hello all, I'm new to this forum but, have been a long time member of Focaljet, the #1 Focus site on the web. It was suggested there that I post this here. Many of us have experienced the same problems with the Focus. Some of these problems are costly if off warranty and some are down right dangerous! I've had the infamous fuel pump problem, cost me $385 out of pocket and I now have the broken ignition switch dilemma. I understand this will cost me possibly as much as $320 to correct. Both these and others are common problems to the Focus and should be the subject of recalls by Ford Motor Company. However, ranting on forums and yelling at customer service on the phone will get you little or nothing. We all need to be filing complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They are the watch dog for these problems. You can report these problems on a secure server and it only takes a few minutes. It appears they are looking into the fuel pump problem at this time, but we need to keep the pressure on to effect a recall. The fuel pump issue is a safety issue. Even if yours was replaced under warranty please file a complaint, it could save someones life. The broken ignition lock is now becoming more prevelant and its a real PITA...

Please don't make me fix this!!!! My girlfriend's mom has a 2001 Ford Focus with a shot fuel pump. She was quoted $900, yes, $900 to fix it. I would like to know if ANYBODY knows if there has been a recall on this. I really don't want to repair it, and she can't afford to have it replaced proffessionally at this time. A recall would be most convenient right now. Please reply

Sorry, there is no recall at this time. $900 to replace a $200 part that takes 2 hrs to accomplish is crazy. Try another dealership.

There is a whole thread on the fuel pump issue a few below this one, go have a read, there is definitely no recall and Ford don't intend on issueing a recall either.
As for the cost, I paid a third of that to get mine fixed when it went out, wherever quoted you that is trying to make pure profit!
Go elsewhere and get it fixed.
My Focus was developing so many problems I sold it to save money! :uhoh:

I have had the same problems a you have. The fuel pump cost me 700$ and my car is noe in the shop having the ignition cylinder change cost still ??? So much for a reliable car...... I'd like to make payments not constant repairs

I sold my 2000 4dr Focus.....it started falling apart on me the day I got it. It had a few miles and was used as a demo they said.......the brakes were worn out at 15000 and the Ford dealer quoted me 600.00 !!! to replace them including rotors etc, drums etc. I went to another dealer who warrantied it, then they told me it had been in an severe accident .
The front tires were flatspotted as a result and finally they replaced them, the headlightseal fell off , knobs fell off the interior ,
the seat adjuster broke, the hood prop even fell off. That was almost enough, but after all this when it came time to sell it I found no one really
wanted it and it was worth half the selling price with only 30000 miles on it. I understand they are better now, I hope so!!!

Hopefully everyone has heard about the recall for the fuel pump (http://www.blueovalnews.com/2003/cars/focus.fuelpump03n01.htm). As for the ignition switch, two suggestions:
1) Go to a locksmith rather than the dealer; I just had mine done for $185 vs. $340 and up quotes from dealers. And no towing required!
2) File a complaint! http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/complain/complaintsearch.cfm
Force Ford to reimburse us for this repair, which seems to have happened to tens of thousands of Foci from what's online and what dealers and locksmiths relayed to me--my locksmith had done 5 already!
