fault points

hey can anyone tell me what are things to look for when doing repairs like parts that are known to go bad this is my first bmw its mine and my grand fathers project car but we are having problems with it ideling and we cant figure it out the only things we have done are change the fuel filter any pointers would be appriciated thanx
