My F-150.... Should have bought somthing else

I have a 2001 F-150 5.4L XLT Super Cab. Love the look, the color, the rides not to bad, it is a truck so it won't ride like a car, but one thing I absolutely hate is the performance. Now, I don't have a lot to compare it to. My last vehicle was a 1994 Camaro Z28. Had a few mods, nothing special, I guess about 300-325 H.P. But I hate the way my truck runs. When I slow to make a turn onto a side street, and step on the gas it won't get out of its own way! It stays in second gear, bogs down and hardly accelerates. I have to floor it to make it down shift and accelerate. Also, as soon as I put a trailer on it, it dies. I towed an 18' open trailer with a 67' Volkswagen and a 250 dirt bike, and when I hit the grades I slowed down to about 35 M.P.H. My 1977 Dodge motor home with the same load does 45-50 up the same hill. Tell me that that is not a disappointment in the power arena. My dad has a 1999 F-150 5.4L Super Cab. His truck hauls ass compared to mine. Does any one have any suggestions on how I can make my truck run right? At this point I wish I bough something else! :banghead:

Just browsing and caught your post. I have a 2003 F-150 4x4 and priviously a 97. I had the same issue with the 97 and it was faulty catalytic converters that caused all the trouble the truck was crap for power .My local dealer tested exhaust flow and found the problem. The truck ripped after the repair. Hope this helps!

Ford trucks SUCK! they are all crapy, even the new ones. They dont even back thier vehicles whith a good warranty. What kind of a warranty is 3 years/ 36,000 miles. Now Dodge is a different story. Thier trucks rule and they back them with a 7 year/ 70,000 mile warranty. What do you say to that you ford :loser: owners???

Don't give up on it. Check the f150.com forum for answers to this problem too.
I had to deal with "the" blown spark plug problem with mine, but after the Big-Sert repair on one spark plug, I love this truck again. I own a 98' 4x2 and have an 02' that is a 4X4 company vehicle with the same motor.
Sounds to me like Tile19 is onto something. This really is a fine truck, ya just have to get it repaired.
I grew up on chevy trucks, had a 70' T-bird, with a 429, and a few 68' 289 Mustangs. I liked the look of the 98' F150, the consumer reports article and got one. All in all, they don't make anything like they use to, sure miss that T-bird and 72' Malibu Chevelle 350.

Your dad makes the drive shafts and they are shit?? what would that tell you? Forget the Toyota, you could put one of those on the back of any American truck, Ford, Chevy, or Dodge and haul it plus the rated load caps!

No no no.... IF your prob is towing, NEVER buy a chevy. They cant handle their own weight much less a work load. Their suspension setup is very poor and sloppy handling. Your Ford can handle the work much more. Another alternative for towing is a Dodge. The new HEMI ram has the highest towing capacity in it's class. The Ford 5.4 Triton isn't too bad either. THey both feel so much loghter on their feet than they Chevys do to better steering and suspension setups.

hello mikey9821. First I'd try tile19's suggetion, If that's not it here are a few other's. Check all vacum line's for cracke's if one's craked you could be losing power due to that. Check your distributar cap's plug wire's and all the plug wire's on the block. Also check spark-plugs. I had a 1994 F-150 4.9 300 straight six which did the same thing your talking about. It was 1 year old when I bought it from the dealer, After six months it started running like a dog, they couldn't seem to find the prob. A friend told me to replace the spark-plugs and only with motorcraft ford plugs. The truck had ac delco in it. I replaced the plugs, wires and the cap and the truck hauled loads like a champ up hilles! Never had another power prob out of it again.

If I'm not mistaken Navistar makes the Diesel engines for Ford, and Chevys duramax dosent even come close in Hp TQ or build quality. Also I have a friend that works driving a car hauler for GM's Fort Wayne truck plant. (where they make silverado's) And he was told not to strap the trucks down too tight because they have been having problems with the frames bending. Chevys suck get it right, damn snap together, Generic Motors, yuk.

Seen this earlier, and should have said something. so I'll say it now. All ford drive shafts are shit? Then why is it that almost EVERY 69 CHEVY CAMARO that has been turned into a race car, uses a Ford Rear end? Almost all serious racing folk out there know what I'm talking about. If they are making shit driveshafts or what ever, then tell em to quit.

Hey mikey, i couldnt' say for sure what's wrong with your truck, but there is definently something not right. I have a 99 f150 lariat with the 5.4 and it has probably more power than a 1/2 ton truck needs. you should be able to turn a corner and bald a tire if you put the hammer down. I pulled a 35ft 5th wheel camper and i never went under 50 pullin some pretty big hills, the only problem i had was that the camper was too heavy for my stock suspension. I'd agree with the guy to check your converter, or mabey even O2 sensors. I hope you can figure out what's wrong with it cuz i had a problem with my coil packs going bad, and i know it can really piss you off. AS for the people that are going off about all the different shit like drive shafts. what the hell is your problem, he asked about gettin his truck to run right, what the hell does that have to do with drive shafts and all that other shit you people are going off about?
If your still havin trouble mikey, you'll have to get in touch, i have some friends that are really awesome with the triton motors and i'm sure they could help u out.

My dad had a 91' f-150 w/ 4.9l I6 engine don't know the performance numbers sorry, but it was a XLT Lariat. He would always be halling somthing. Constantly had three tool boxes in the back it was one of the strongest engines Ford ever made with over 200,000 miles on it the only things we ever replaced were the clutch, tires of corse, and the belts at 200,000 miles because they were so old and my dad didn't want them to break on him. We got rid of it at 220,000 miles and gave it to my granfather and it runs like brand new now. Now we have a 03' f-250 4dr. w/ new 6.0l power stroke and might i add it has a 100,000 mile warranty. While our Expedition has a 65,000 mile warranty.

And don't even get me started on GM trucks, just look at all the telephone workers and any other bucket truck or truck that has held alot of weight in its day, THE DAMN FRAME SAGS, nice quality piece of JUNK that GM made there
The new 5.4liter motor and new f150 is quite the truck, trust me, I drive em and sell em :)
Dude, have your codes scanned and check your exhaust, I would also check your plugwells for oil and maybe even any leaky gaskets

There is always something wrong to find in these trucks, in mine it is the front suspension clunking sound? But it has never failed me. Since the price of gas is up 300% from a little over a year ago I wish I could get 40 MPG but we know that will not be allowed.
Gas hog yes, but what a truck.

my sisters boyfriend goes to wyotech for diesel mech and his dad is one of the instructors in the diesel class and they both said that cummings is built by ford and dodge is losing the contract with the cummings diesel and yes chevy trucks are the weakest link in the heavy duty due to the frames and there type of ifs and with the entire drive train

i wouldn't own a new powerstroke if you gave me one... IMHO the new 6.0L diesel is nothing but problems from what i've seen and heard... sticky injector leaks diesel fuel past the rings and thins the oil and wipes out the whole bottom end... mains and rods. junk. only "ford" diesel i'd own is an old 7.3 or a 6.9... because they seem to be worth while. there's nothing wrong with a duramax or a cummins for that matter. and once again, IMHO.... the cummins would out-last ANY diesel motor in ANY other truck as to the brand war... i guess its just a matter of preference. in my experiences ford 150 series pickups ARE some of the longest-lasting trucks on the road with very little problems. you'll get tired of driving them before they wear out. lol. but then again it can go both ways. as to the point of this post... my buddy (who's name i'm using) does the EXACT same thing. great oil pressure when its cold, warms up, needle bottoms out and check engine light comes on and stays on and needle stays buried. hope we're not too late to save the motor. guess while we're doing a clutch we might as well rip the rest of it apart, do the rods and mains, and the oil pump.
