My father just picked up a previa van with 197K miles. when he starts up
no problem. when he puts in to gear is makes a knocking noise which goes away at higher speeds. in reverse out of neutral or park, makes noise. seems like anytime load is placed it makes the sound. I think maybe flexplate. any thoughts ? thanks in advance.

Just check the Clutch cover parts inside the transmission. Maybe the contact of your clutch disk and the pressure spring are always disengaging.
