Silverado A/C problem

My '99 Silverado is starting to have A/C problems. For no apparent reason the compressor will just kick out and stay off until I push the A/C button (to the off position) and leave it off for 3-5 minutes. Then I can turn it back on and it might run fine for a while. I've already checked the freon pressures and replaced the low pressure switch (on the accumulator), but it still does this crap.
Any thoughts?
TIA,
Dan

I had the exact same problem the you are explaining. IT was the AC clutch. I checked by starting the engine with the hood up and waiting until the clutch cut off. Then after a couple minutes and the truck starts to get warm in the cab I activated the clutch with a screwdriver while the engine was running(Very dangerous). Then I knew that the clutch was the problem. I turned the engine off and bent the tabs with a hammer and screwdriver on the clutch just a little to put it closer to the magneto and voila. Cold ac all summer.

I have a 98 C/K1500 with 72k on it.The AC would cut off in the middle of a hot summer day going to work, and i would have to turn fan switch to off/on back and forth till it stayed working.Still in warranty i took it in, and they said the whole switch assy needed to be replaced (under warranty).Been working fine since.
