Hey y'all,
Anyone know how much replacing an AUTO Max 1995 tranny would cost?? I am sure thats the issue although havent confirmed...
Also - WHY does nobody ever mention 'fixing' a tranny - are they not 'fixable'?
Just thought I'd try again - the ONLY option I have is to take car to the DREADED dealer ...y'all know what that mean$ ...
Has anyone experienced this:
- automatic 95 Max ..shifts v. v. hard (thud) from 1st to 2nd gear (not 2nd to 3rd or to 4th - only when 1st to 2nd gear)
- this started EXACTLY after I changed the ECU - which came from another 1995 AUTO Max ...
- my 'small shop' mechanic/friend does not know what it is ..cuz apparently Max tranny's cannot be adjusted ..
-- somebody mentioned a TCU - transm control unit -- does anyone know what thsi is? where is it? what it does?
thanks a bundle... free beer anyone?

As far as I know the tranny can't be rebuilt and Nissan only encourages new or total replacement trannys for their cars.
As far as the thudding noise, that is exactly what happened to mine before it went bye-bye, so if I were you, I'd go for safety and stay with the dealership regardless of the cost.
There is a TSB out for the 2k Tranny, not sure about the 95 though, you may want to do a search on the net to see if there is a TSB out on it, it may help to explain what the problems and symptoms are.
The only other thing I can think of to tell you regarding tranny replacement is to look in the junkyards if you don't want to pay top dollar for a brand new one or have someone build you an aftermarket tranny that is stronger and more durable than our stock unit.
Race trannys are great they can handle up to 1000 hp.

Any transmission can be rebuilt. Go to a transmission specialist, not the dealer. You'll probably save some money. AAMCO Transmissions if there's one by you.

i had my 1-3-5 gears replaced on my 95. it cost me out the ass though. nissans tranny's are not easily accessible, most of the $$$ was labor.

as i type this my 94' maxima is getting it's tranny fixed. it really depends on how bad it is slipping. The manager at Mr. Transmission told me it is 1700 bucks for a completely new tranny. but since i took mine to him as soon as it started to slip it is only costing me abot 900 to get it fixed. but i do not expect it to last for more than 2 years.
