How do you display yours?

Most of my best models sit proudly on 2 shelves in my home office (the rest are scattered around the house depending on quality).
However over the years dust has taken its toll on the models and I've had to spend time cleaning them. Unfortunately some have been damaged because of this.. :frown:
I'm now thinking of getting my hands on some type of glass display unit (e-bay has loads of ex-shop type cases) hopefully with some lights.
I was wondering what you guys do with all the models you put together..?
Do you display them in purpose built dust free rooms or put them back in a box never to see the light of day again (apart from forum meets and shows).
If anyone has any pictures of your models in display cases it would help me choosing the right one...
Cheers,

I just have like my really favorite ones, right now only my WRX STi and my Hummer out. I just go and buy those really cheap plastic cases from Wal-Mart and they work out great. The others, I just have under my bed. I use them because you can just move one of them. When I grow up though and have my own house, I'm going to make a room just for my cars. I shall car it... a GARAGE!!!
Just kidding, I'll have a room in my house for my model cars.

I have a whole room in my house for modeling. I have a standard bookshelf in which I display all my models. I only have like 9 built, so I don't need a lot of room (yet). Like EMAXX I get the cheap display cases ($6 or so) from Wal-mart to put the completed kits in. They look okay and you can make some nice scenery with some railroad grass/gravel and spray adhesive. And most importantly, I never have to worry about dust on the cars.

Steve,
What size are those cases that hold the 2-3 models? 1/18 cases? And where'd you get that super long one? Thanks.

But I think I 'll have to go to the IKEA, and buy me a bigger one...

Cool, that would be sweet in my front room . . . one of the nearby model shops in maidstone has a cabinet the same as that which is full up with slot cars and RC stuff- it looks really good when its going round!
Oh- and the very bottom shelf (the one on the floor) is the same diameter as a certain type of scalextric track and theyve got a circle set up with a lotus 7 that goes round and round all day, that looks cool to

Yes they are 1/18 cases, the long one was custom made by a local plastics company and it cost 50 pounds

Hey just a though guys. What about making your own display case? I haven't done it yet, but I'm thinking of getting some plexi-glass from Home Depot and building a simple case out of that? Should be easy for a bunch of guys that build model kits, don't you think? I think I'd rather build something that can hold several kits at once like the one in Hiroboy's post.
Anyone done this or have any experience to share? Is it harder to do than I think? Then again, $6 is pretty cheap for a pre-made unit that looks good...

On a serious note though, I'll probably end up building some form of display cabinet myself. Afterall, building a wooden box with a glass front is hardly the hardest thing to do in the world. I'll post some pics once I've done it too.

Tis is from IKEA too:

The Modells are well prevented from dust behind the Glass. The IKEA Vitrines are worth the money and they are less expensive then the professionell vitrines.

Hi there. You can buy Lexan sheets for around $8 and make yourself some units. To cut it, you just scribe it with a knife, hit the back, and it'll make a clean break. Just use some epoxy glue to melt the peices together and your done.
I haven't done it myself because I have no need, but I did make a similar box to hold the coolant for my water cooled pc.

Murray. I tried previously to make the display cases from plexi glass before. Even with professional tools at the workshop, cutting a clean 45 degree angle on the edges are really difficult. Adding to this using Dichloro Methane to stick the edges together was not 100% clean, that's just my unsucessful experiences. I gave up after a while, and just settled for the individual display cases tamiya make, Type C. Reasonably priced, good size, and a good clear finish. I have been using these for a little time now, but how do you guys stick ur finished model to the base of the display case??
MPWR
04-17-2004, 08:59 AM
Yeah, beveling the edges of plexi sheets seems like it would be a quick route to insanity. A better idea would be to cut all edges to 90 deg, and cut one side a bit long. Sand and polish the edges, and the glue seams shouldn't be too intrusive. This is how aquariums are done.

Mine are sitting on glass a shelf which are hanging over my bed. each self is 36 in long by 10 in deep hanging from industial looking mounts of steel cable. The other two shelves aren't up yet because the would be empty. I can see the undercarriages from my bed. The 1/35 transports are on a three foot long diarama which takes up the top tier of my desk (but looks horrible). The 1/35 armor is on the work surface of the desk, but i am considering moving it to the diarama.
I'll take pictures if anyone wants any, but i am too lazy and it's too dark now.

Hey steve was that your own creation?
Nah.. IKEA in the UK. I've got some, as I paid a visit to them a few months back. Got some floor standing ones as well..
Worst bits of flat pack I've ever brought..!! Cheap tacky rubbish TBH. You get what you pay for..
To be fair, once built (carefully, otherwise it drops to bits or breaks) and they are inplace in your house, and you secure them to the wall or floor, they are fine and do the job, but not the best bits of furniture.
It was the first time I'd been to IKEA, will go again I guess, but just don't expect much, as their cheap stuff is just that - cheap..!!
He has done a nice job with the units though.. Proof that cheap can look good if done well..!!

I use 2 IKEA towers and planning to get a third one!
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/5340/skylinesociety2mk.png
The "two towers" can contain 6 skylines per stage (but it doesn't look good) and they don't cost too much: $115CAD and the new prince is low: $85CAD (before taxes)
The big one in the middle is full of 1/18 die-cast... :screwy:
The tinny one is my friend's tower: a CD display case witch can hold 9 1/24 scale cars... 40 canadian bucks
