i've noticed some major differences between the '93 and '98 modles of the 3sgte - and was wondering if u guys could help me figure this out
what improvments were made? and why is the intake different? was the head changed...?
any help would be appreciated, i'm just trying to figure out what's different and why

All I know is that the pre '94 (I think) 3S-GTE's were the Gen 1, and the post '94 were Gen 2's. I'm not 100%, I'm not all that clued up on MR2's as I was before. But I do know that the 2ndGen 3S-GTE made about 40 more HP then the 1st Gen.
I've got a website kicking around with all the info on it, I'll see if I can find it for you.
[EDIT] Damn, I'm sure I had it bookmarked. :bloated:

Theres some pretty obvious differances you can see just looking at the pics.
Differnt inlet manifold to begin with, and Im guessing either twin coil, or individual coil with a differnt ignition set up.
I know they changed the Turbo, and Im sure they also run more boost.
Differnt ECU mapping of course, infact I should imagine a totaly new ECU with OBD II instead of OBD I.
Posssibly differnt cams.

this is just a guess. but the the 93 uses t-vis. the 98 uses vvt. i'm not sure though. but i do know the early 3sgte's use t-vis. im not sure if the tvis on a mr2 operates like the tvis on a 4ag-e.

Actually the 1st gen 3SGTE wasnt even in a MR2...1st gen 3SGTE was in 88-89 Celica AllTrac (GT-Four in Japan).

Basicly the SW20 Turbo MR2 never recieved any changes to the 3sgte to gain anymore hp from the oct 1993 upwards (Gen III engine)....ONLY body + safety changes etc. There are only 3 versions of the 3SGTE, the Caldina GT-T 3sgte is however more powerful and has quite a few different things engine wise...could be considered the Gen IV.
Revision 1 - 10/1989 - 12/1991 (Gen I 3sgte)
Revision 2 - 12/1991 - 10/1993 (Gen II 3sgte)
Revision 3 - 10/1993 - 06/1996 (Gen III 3sgte)
Revision 4 - 06/1996 - 12/1997 (Visual + safety changes only)
Revision 5 - 12/1997 - 10/1999 (Visual + safety changes only)
Cheers

Hi, since this is an engine post, can i ask a few qs?
ok, from what i gather at the forum, people recoment putting in the 2.0 litre 3s-gte engine instead of the 2.2 litre 5s-fe engine?
why?
i'm quite new to cars and stuff but i thought that the bigger the engine displacement, the faster it would go?
could anybody please tell me why then the 3s-gte engine is better?
also, was wondering, are these 2 engine types the only ones that fit? because i havent seen any posts about other engines you could put in, such as, is there a 2.4 or a 3litre engine you could fit into the engine bay of a MR2?
Thanks guys.

the answer to your question djrdx is that the 2.0 liter engine is turbo charged while the 2.2 liter is n/a...im not sure y they made it that way
also, some differencse between the mr2's throughout the years is that
1991 - 1993 the us turbo version had 200hp
1991 - 1993 jspec version had 225hp
1994 + us version was upgraded to 225hp
1994 + jspec version was upgraded to a 245hp engine and a new ct20 turbo which replaced the old ct26...
i hope that answered some of your questions

also the new 98 models no longer uses that flap sensor to measure air flow becusae it proved to be too restrictive so they changed the air flow meter. it was either a MAF or a MAP i do not remember.

is it possible to convert the 2.2l 5s-fe engine to turbocharged in order to get more power out? then would be better than the 3s-gte 2.0?

After market tunners are working on a turbo version of the 2.2 5S-FE, with about 8 psi boost pressure.
The 2.0 3S-GTE and the 2.2 5S-FE uses basically the same engine block. The bore size is what make them different. Since the 2.0 bore size is smaller, the cylinder wall is thicker, to handle the extra boost from a trubo charger.
I am no engineer, but this is my opion on why they choose to make the 2.2 normally aspirated.

ALL J-spec Gen III SW20's (so oct 93 upwards) have a MAP system instead of an AFM.
1994 + jspec version was upgraded to a 245hp engine and a new ct20 turbo which replaced the old ct26...
CT20b turbo.....CT20 was in the Hilux, or some toyota 4wd of some sort.

The Toyota CT20 turbo is used on the 3TGTE, 4TGTE, and 22RTE engines in the 80’s but this WILL NOT bolt on the 3SGTE manifolds......ALL J-spec october 1993 upwards MR2's have the CT20B from the factory...before that was the CT26 as you say. Im 150% on this one.
