A clanking noise...?

Hi!
This might be a weird question but, I was being a little immature last week and burning out all over the place. Then all of a sudden my car was clanking like mad! I got out looked at the engine and all LOOKED ok
and sounded fine. Then I got back into my car and bam. Then clanking started again. The odd thing is, it sounds like it is coming from the side of the engine, not from the head. Its on the side of the timing belt
not the intake. It only happens when accelerating and gets worse as the RMP's go up. At idle its sound fine! Like nothing is wrong at all. Any info
would be greatly appreciated as I am poor and new in town.
Thank you!

make sure that a rock or sumthin didnt get between the engine and the bay.... had it happen to me and it kinda clanked but it was more of a shaking... i took the rock out and all was well... hopefully this is your problem

A similar thing happened to me, I was fooling around and this loud clacking sound started. It got louder as I revved the engine and didn't exist during idle. It also sounded like it was coming from the side of the engine. After tearing the block apart I found out it was the connecting rod bearing was worn out to the point were there was only half a bearing left. The engine was also suffering from crankwalk, I don't know if this was the cause or not.

The only good news is that I wasn't planning any mods for the car but since it had to be rebuilt or replaced anyway I figured that I would swap in a 6 bolt and have it rebuilt properly. That event gave me the DSM tuning bug:biggrin:

Don't know if this is what is happening to your engine but it is very similar. Good luck:bigthumb:

crankwalk 2g, did the noise go away at a certain rpm? or did it get louder as you reved it all the way up?

Could be rod knock , could be a spun BS bearing( do the 420A's have those? ) Might have jumped a few teeth on the cam (unlikely).

From what I've heard, the 420As rod bearings fail as often as the 4g63s thrust bearings ;o) Rod bearing failure is the crankwalk of the NT mtors. And it certainly does sound like it the way you describe it.

The more I revved the engine the louder it got, but the car ran almost like normal only a tiny bit sluggish.

I have a similar noise, but it goes away around 2700rpm, and I cant figure it out.

Before the swap my engine also made a noise that disapeared at higher rpm but it was a ticking sound not the extremly loud clacking that later developed. Never found out what caused the ticking.
