clear coat?

ok, for the skyline model that i am planning to make i will be using tamiya primer, and tamiya base color paint. since this is my first time trying the painting process explained in the FAQ i want to use a clear coat on top of the base coat.

what should i use for the clear coat?

Testors clear coat works pretty well, there seems to be no problem with it, but i use Tamiya, although it might melt your paint just a tiny bit when applied.

Use Tamiya clear. Testors isn't nearly as good.

Tamiya clear, seams to work good and no paint problems over Tamiya lacquer :D

ok, going to use all tamiya stuff, from beggining to end. tamiya primer, tamiya color, and then tamiya clear coat. will this work well?

also, is is possible to get tamiya polishing compound in the US?

Just some advice, when u spray the clear coat on, spray in light coats, and remember to let ur base coat of paint dry about 2 hours, and then move on to clear, if u do not let the base dry it has a chance of melting the base coat paint, i know all of this from experience.

ive actually had no prob with Tamiya Clear over Tamiya Acrylics and i sprayed on about 3 heavy coats. the key is to make sure the base coat is thoroghly cured, i let mine cure for about a week.

That is my combinaison and it work well... but I don't know why, this */%king RX-7 has never hardened !

Can you explain this:

2 coat of fine Primer Tamiya, 3 coats of X6 Yellow Tamiya then 2 coats of Clear X22 Tamiya, I let dry for a week and the masking tape (Tamiya of course) is still making it's traces when applied on top of this former marvelous machine ???

That's the way I always worked before but this time, it's not hard enough, my fingerprints are digging without any effort in the finish.

Have they changed their receipe? Is it too humid? What's the matter with this?:confused: :mad:

So now, I have to put another coat (or several) of Clear to erase all the trouble I had. The pain, the RX-7 was done but now I have to redo the Clear or peel off everything and redo all the things that was done !

what about testors clear laquer? has anyone used this?

I use the Testors and it works really well. I don't really have a choise though, my closest hobby shop is like 8 hours away, so I have to use what I can get at Wal-Mart and stuff.

First off, the Testors will turn yellow over time. Secondly, it doesn't spray nearly as well as the Tamiya. Thirdly, it takes longer to dry - and that means a bigger chance of getting dust in the clear coat.

Just my experiences.

I've used Tamiya primer, spray cans, clear coat, rubbing compound, and wax exclusively since I've started building. I've never had any problems with them at all. I recommend them completely.

Rubbing compound is available in the US. Just check Tamiya USA's website for a listing of hobby stores that carry plastic model stuff. They should have compound. If not, try online, www.hobbylinc.com is a good place.

aight, i think i'll stick with tamiya. i myself have always had good experiances with tamiya products, and it seems the same for most other people on this board.
