Does anyone know how to disconnect (turn-off) the check engine light on a '96 Jetta?

hey, i've been having the same trouble with my 94 jetta. seems like when the light comes on, the power of the car decreases, kinda like it accelerates slower...if i took it to my local garage, do you think he could hook it up to the computer system and find out whats wrong??

scan your ecu is the best thing to do,, do not bypass the light,,, it`s there for a reason, alarm you of something wrong... if it`s really the case you want to diseable it , i will tell you step by step how to do, and even past the inspection test with this hook up ; )

just ask me.

I don't want to remove my ECU, although I did eyeball the breaker for it, however I would like to know how to get it to spit error codes to me, my light has been on for a month, and I have been noticing a drag in performance. I'm wondering if it's the standard O2 sensor, or what, Thanks.

fix the problem first...
but there is a odometer in front of the fire wall, in line with the speedo cable. there is a button on this odometer box... hit the button, that will reset the counter, for the next "schedualed" engine check.

If you remove the ashtray & slide the panel beside it (with the picture of the engine) to the left it will reveal the data link connector. You can insert a jumper between pin 4 (top row, 4th from left) and pin 15 (bottom row second from right) with ignition on & engine off. Check engine light will blink a series of four digit codes. I believe this only works with pre-96 vehicles, non-OBD-II. For example: one flash pause, three flashes, pause, two flashes pause, five flashes long pause would be code 1325. Post the results (preferably in a new thread).

I just bought a 2001 Jetta 2.0L, it runs great has 43,000k miles on it, but just today the check engine light came on. I have heard a lot of discussion regarding the Oxegen sensors. The car is still running very good, so no hesitation or rpm fluctuations, its just on. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Also, I have the extended warranty, will they cover this?

Most things will still be covered under the factory warranty. Take it to VW to get it checked out.

I'm havng the same prob with my 97 Jetta. I've had the check engine light turned off 6 times in the last week. I need it off so it can pass emissions here in Cali. Afterwards I can chase down what the heck is causing it to come on. HOW DO I DISABLE THIS BEAST????

1996 & up must be scanned & reset with a scan tool. Most of the time the light or other codes will reset before you can even get to an inspection station or they will get a code that an OBD-II drive cycle is incomplete & will know what you are trying to do. If you are in an emmission inspection area your best bet is to get it looked at by someone competent in VW's. If you want to try to fix it youself go to Autozone to get the codes read & post them in a new thread.
