Explain Davy Jones Locker

who the hell was davy jones?
why do they refer to the sea as his locker???
will someone please explain to me this reference?

Davey Jones was the lead singer of the Monkeys. They would wear similar outfits for their gigs as most groups back then did. While doing a tour in the Mediterranean he dropped his suitcase into the water. Needless to say, they couldn’t get it back. So his stuff is stored in the locker that is the sea.
