Header wrap

I'm thinking of heat insulating my headers. What are the benefits, how does it work technically? Also, what is a good brand to buy?

Wrapping the headers maintains exhaust gas heat within the header. This translates into more exhaust flow due to maintaining exhaust temperatures as it flows out of the engine. By improving the scavenging of spent gases, the engine breathes more efficiently. This reduces contamination of gases, thus allowing the engine to develop more power. Also reduces under-hood temps. It does however void any header warranty's

There's the tech part, as for the Brand, if your headers are stock then I suggest getting brand name. Something like DC Sport or AEM are the ones I would use. If they're aftermarket then I would use the same brand as the header you got. You should be able to find stuff like that at a local auto parts store or wherever you got your header from.

4 cyl has 1 header, not headers. If its stock then its a exhaust manifold not header.

ive heard that the wrap can cause the header to rust or corrode underneath... is there any truth to that?

Something like that, I guess thats why the warranty gets voided.

I wish there were a newbie forum where people couldn't post anywhere but there until they hit lvl 1 or something.

The hotter something is, the more it wants to expand. Insulating your HEADER will cause it to reach higher temperatures, making the exhaust gas inside want to expand more. The only place it can go is towards your muffler, so it will have a higher exhaust speed, thus keeping those spent gasses from sneaking back into the combustion chamber on the next rotation.

No the Warranty gets voided because the header wrap keeps the head inside the header which can cause the header to crack under high heat.

Also AEM does not make headers.

thats the basic idea - there is a lot more to it. If you want a better explanation try www.google.com or some search site.

...Ok, so do you guys think I should use it or not. I have a stock exhaust manifold, I'm not getting headers so Im willing to do this. But it sounds risky if it breaks, but then again I dont have some high powered engine, its a D16y8.

Not worth it on a stock D16. IMO, its' not worth it on any car, as it does blacken and eventually burn off after time. Jet hot coating is a much better choice, it works better and it lasts longer.

Does it come in a spray can or something?

No, you get the parts coated by jet hot, their "base" coating is a 1300 degree resistant coating, and you can get it in a polished silver, black, and I think a dark blue as well.

So you'd have to ship you part off and wait forever to get it back? It sounds cool and really professional, but sucks for people with only one car.
