hey guys so ive purchased my 1995 240sx SE s14 and now im ready to buy my front ?clip....SO WHICH ONE SHOULD I BUY AND WHATS THE DIFFERENCES.
here are the ones i have avaliable and list any i miss
1.) 90-93 SR20DET (U13) Front clip
2.0L L4 DOHC
205HP
2.) 90-91 SR20DET (N14)
2.0L L4 DOHC
230HP
3.) 91-93 SR20DET (S13) FRONT CLIP
2.0L L4 DOHC
205HP w/ 5 SPD M/T
4.) 94-98 SR20DET (S14) FRONT CLIP
2.0L L4 DOHC
220HP w/ 5 SPD M/T
5.) 94-96 SR20DET (S13) Blk-Top 225 hp Motor Set: Eng + Wireharness +Ecu
6.)90-94 SR20DET (u13) Red-Top 205 hp Front-clips
Im planning on doing alot of upgrades and using the stock internals so which is best engine to build on? is it worth spending the few extra hundred to purchase a s14 if you have the money? will the s14 work better in installation and less headache than the s13? Are they the same in installation?
thanks guys

you might think its in the FAQ but its not...it just shows the specs... no where on it does anyone give personal experiences with installing a s13 into a s14 or if they would have gone s14 if more money...Or which they prefer over redtop or black top
im just asking what people would do if the money was there and is the few extra hundred worth the more expensive motors...or is it just worth it to save that few hundred and use it on the engine
stock HP isnt the issue. its how good the block is VS the others and so on
thats all =)

Well, it's still a decent starting point, with a bit of analysis to it... and you didn't say you'd already checked... ;)
Also, where are you? I don't know if it's DOT or EPA or local bureaus that will sometimes say that you can only swap in motors from the same model year or newer. If you live in a place w/ yearly inspections, that's an important detail...

it is going to be a track car only...so no street
and ive heard s13 is the way to go and blacktop is the best way to go...
what do you guys think...i hate to bug my distributors over and over untill i find exactly what i want so here is another newbie question, what is the price difference we are talking about when going from redtop to blacktop...and is it evenworth the extra money? do people say the black is better because its fresher motor with less miles and it has 20hp more? cuz if thats it that i can use the extra money saved buying a retop and throw it in my motor

okay first of all the S13 had both a Red and a Black top so your confuzing me with what exactly it is your asking for. You also mention the s14 Black top i think in another post?? But here goes, installation for any SR is basicly the same thing so it wont be anymore dificult installing a S13redtop or a S14 SR.
Prices is in the FAQ and every where else in this forum so i wont go over that, but alot of ppl recamend getting the Redtop purly for the fact that its cheaper then the others, and with the extra money lefted over you could mod it and have more HP then the newer and more expensive motors. So it realy is up to you, I on the other hand would not get a Redtop because i dont like the color red (stuped reason but hey my money) but depending on how much money i got i might consider it and just repaint the cover. Mod it to what ever desired power i want and there you go.
There realy is no reason to get the higher SR's exept for the bragging rights. witch isnt a bad thing ether, but you can also just Turbo your KA. You said you just baught your 240 and your already thinking about motor swaps and such. Dont tell me thats the sole reason for getting your 240... even if it is deny it at all cost here... OR ELSE... :comprage1 But if that is the only reason then good luck...
BTW you also mentioned its gona be just for track?? what type of track Im not sure your gona do much good raceing with an SR, perhaps an RB or go KA-T. i dont know... ignor me :thefinger

I did buy the 240sx for the sole purpose of doing the swap...why do you have a 240sx or 180sx if you dont like them? and why wouldnt this be a cheap route for performance? i can pick up a highmileage good looking 240sx s14 1995 for 1000-1500 and then drop the SR in and to what i hear would be plenty of power for the kiddies. Why not spend the dime and make it a track car...what car would you recommend for SCCA track then? ive done some research and the weight ratio seems sound. Except for a few like the rx-7 which i hate and 510 datsun that i have which is old and im ready to get something a bit newer
please explain because to me it seems like the perfect project car for a 3-4k car budget and 7k upgrade budget. cheap cars to begin with, afforable parts, many resources, non inflated prices unlike my supra parts.
thanks

well the thing with BMW m3 or e30's is that they are expensive cars to buy off hand, expensive parts and aftermarket, and would suck up my budget just to have a stock bmw
those m3's or e30's are not 3-4k cars by the way

e30's absolutly are 4-5k$ cars (there from the 80's). you might be thinkin e36. besides you don't need an m3. get an '89 325. who knows, maybe you can score the older 325xi. go to www.bmwe30.net

well BMW is out of my league...even if i scored a nice for cheap it would not be in the prime engine years...meaning highmileage and what not so lets get off the BMW situation for a bit
OK i have done some research with some drift racers but unfortunetly they had to get off the phone due to being out of town but i am left with a question
i see these 90-93 nissan-skyling r32 rb20det (front clip) 210hp selling relatively CHEAP...cheaper than redtop s13 sr20det? NOw i am also aware that alot of 240 owners use the redtop because like the guy above said, "budget" and its a cheap way for motor swap...Now whats deal with the old skyline motors aka rb20det? i know the newer style skyline swaps are semi popular but relatively expensive and most say for the money saved on buyiing a sr20det the extra money can go into the sr20det internals and be better than rb25det...
so the question is...besides the STATS on the rb20det any reason so cheap and why people dont use them that much?
2.) above, someone who replied to my initial question made the comment of someone buying a s14 240sx in the sole purpose of swaping the engine, is an idoit....im new to the nissan world hence being in toyota supra world for 7 years...so whats so bad about the newer 240sx for a buildable chasis project car???
thats it guys
thanks for the few who reply

The RB20 is the weakest of the skyline engines (puny bottem end and weird valve set up) and its only 2 liters so whats the point of having the extra weight of a I6
anyhoo if your upgrading turbos Flat Tops (black or red) are the way to go due to the high port design. but the later models have less milage and more power stock they both can make big power so i geuss its up to you what you want
a few of the choices you list are also Transverse Set ups (I think)

i see.....ok now what about engineset VS frontclip.. i understand you get everything with the front clip but since i have a s14 why would i need any other parts off a s13 sr20det clip then engine, tranny, ignitor and harness, intercooler, starter, altenator, a/c stuff which wont go on
the reason i ask this is because from my shop i can buy both engineset or front clip so below are my options (note these prices dont include shipping)
OPTIONS are for sr20det s13 clip...maybe black maybe red they dont guarentee because its a huge distributor and cannot physically look.
1.) a engine set that includes engine w/turbo, tranny and ecu but no harness for 1400. find a harness online or ebay for 100 bucks, FMIC for 600-700, nice BOV 200-300, use STock radiator and leave out the fuel system untill i decide on which route i want to go. PRICE TOTAL: 2300 but might not include altenator or starter, so in that event what do you guys do??? Also i can have some one adapt the stock A/C to work on the sr20det motor
2.)Front clip for 2500. includes everything i need. BUT since this car wont be stock sr20det for long, and due to the price increase of 1100 dollars for clip, ill have to delay the purchase of new intercooler and use nasty stock side ones. But will include everything i need from get go PRICE TOTAL:2500 stock sr20det
'what do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure unstablehybrids.com liked the rb20 engine since they did a few swaps with it for their project cars. This may only be because it is a cheap engine in comparison to an rb25 or rb26, but maybe it was for ease of modification or something else.
MR2 is a great car. Very reliable, great handling, huge performance potential, etc. They do pretty well in amatuer racing. You can get a 91 for a very reasonable price and you don't have to do an engine swap...though it can be a good idea for more potential.

:iagree: Being a Supra driver I'm suprised he hasn't though of it. He did mention that he didn't want a 2 seater though, and the MR2's engine compartments are really cramped so they're a huge pain to work on. You could always rip out the wall between the engine & the trunk though :).
Handling is kinda iffy, the 240 probably handles better. Great reliability though, I have around 220k on mine. Turbos blown though:mad:

cause it just does
im not positive but i think it has to do with the angle the ports turn in the head high ports would be better because of not having to make the sharper turn for the ports to be lower in the head (the ports that attach to the manifolds) im not sure thats correct but its my take on the highport lowport thing.
Caper - HPI (from Australia) did an article on the RB20 that was pretty informitive you can see if its still on book stands or i may be able to scan it for you. anyhoo thats where i got my statement about the RB20 (nevermind about the weak bottomend i think i had a brainfart) but the head/intake still has problems and the turbos (T3) is to small to do much with

thanks for the info...the only reason i question the sr20det is because i dont know how it will hold in the actuall Track racing world...i dont see many people actually racing these engines besides in drift in japan. What im looking for is a engine that will hold its own and wont turn weak after a year of heavy racing...also i do have plans to modify internals but would still like to run stock untill the time comes...
i hear the stock can hold over 400rwhp but how long will it last is my question
